Seems to be a gap between walls and floor. What kind of waterproofing system is this mint green stuff?

My contractor said the gap is purposeful and the tile will be placed under…

The green stuff is mapei aqua defense with hardie cement board.

You have ACCIDENTLY :) hired the wrong handyman.

A. Hardie not done to MFG specs on many levels.

B. Screws thru top of curb and lower on liner

C. Improper attempt at waterproofing so far

etc etc.

Simply put this does not meet Industry nor mfg specifications and there is NO way to fix it as is. I would stop the job try to recoup funds and come back here to this thread and ask for help on HOW to make the best hiring decision you can next time.

This will not end well for you w/o a tear out and a new professional tile crew.

No tape or thinset on the joints and a very slap dash attempt at topical waterproofing, The cement board seems to have been installed with a traditional "water in water out system" in mind rather than the poor attempt at topical waterproofing.

A. What is not done properly with the hardie? Would like to address this.
B. Should screws be placed differently on the curb?
C. Should the waterproofing encompass more than the joints? Should it be over all walls?

Unfortunately we won’t be able to get much money back at this point in the job. We were ensured it was being done properly but I am glad I am checking here now. Is there anything else that raises concerns?

Is there a sheet of poly behind the cement board?

Is the shower pan formed from a sheet of plastic pitched to the drain and filled with a very dry mortar mix?

The cement board joints should all be covered with alkali tape and thinset.

There shouldn't be any screws through the curb or at the bottom of the cement board to avoid going through the shower pan liner.

A. Hardiebacker requires 8" maximum screw spacing (alkali-resistant screws). Then, seams are taped *with thinset*. It's difficult to tell from the photos, but it looks like you may have the tape, but then the AquaD was painted straight onto the tape. The idea behind the tape and thinset is to create a monolithic assembly to prevent sheets from moving independently of one another.

B. There should be no screws on the curb. This is, unfortunately where things are going to have to be redone, not just a quick fix. That gray liner that's visible on the outside of the curb shouldn't have any penetrations except for the outside of the curb and around the top of the blocking behind the board. This is where a lot of showers develop leaks. The proper way to do this is to use lathe and mortar to form the curb over the liner.

C. Yes. Except for the pan that already has a liner. :(
