Quiz for the day - what is a purple rose? (with photos)
Comments (19)When the weather is cool and if shaded from Western sun then the most purple rose I grow is THE PRINCE. Blooms start out crimson red but by the time they fully open and mature the color is a rich imperial purple. My REINE DES VIOLETTES has magenta-pink blooms but they always finish up a soft true violet. Acidic soil rich in iron tends to bring out the best color transformation. Try adding chelated iron as a fertilizer supplement. Among the once blooming Old Garden Roses there is no rose more purple than CARDINAL DE RICHELIEU. How purple? Think grape cool aid purple. I recently saw WILD BLUE YONDER and it was a stunning purple. The ruffled petals and open flower form is very beautiful. Kinda like ANGEL FACE but on a healthier more vigorous plant. RHAPSODY IN BLUE is very purple but the flowers do fade to subdued grayish lavender. Most roses in the mauve color class start out with strong crimson/magenta tones then "fade" to purple and lavender. The sole exceptions are the silvery lavender roses found among the Hybrid Teas. These roses start and finish the same color - a washed out lavender. Some are positively gray. They are also horribly inbreed, weak and disease prone. Lavender/mauve/purple is not a natural color for roses. The color actually comes from the color of the cell vacuoles and not from the "red" plant pigment cyanin found in roses....See MoreBest Purple ?? Rose in the Purple Family??
Comments (23)HMF has Night Owl listed as deep wine red as well as mauve. Purple to anything with pink shading is okay, although purple to a lavender shading would be better. I am not sure about the red, as everything in the front yard is pink, lavender, white, or purple. Purple Skyliner appears to have the best color range but I am not sure how it will perform here. Wild Blue Yonder is possible too, but after re -evaluating the space, I think something with small flowers would look better. I am beginning to consider planting a small white climbing rose for the area because finding the right purple is tough, or I am just fried. Thank you for all of the input. Comments (4)Matters of scale: Grafted roses: fields are tied up for two years plus time for rather lethal fumigations. Grow rootstock Harvest nodes for grafting Talented propagators? employed by the company or imported. Timing for the rootstock to be right to take the graft or bud Irrigation Two years of irrigation Harvest (wish they would clean the choppers above and below ground), label bag and ship. Is the rootstock used right for all parts of the country? No, but producer doesn't care as his job is to produce plants to sell. And he can do this in bulk. Own root: take cutting root and grow out cutting sell....See MoreComparing a few dark purple-y pink/red roses that hold color well
Comments (23)Cori Ann, how wonderful to line up these lovelies for a little beauty pageant and some easy comparisons. I love them all, but only grow Young Lycidas. I'd go for Falstaff, but Munstead and The Prince will have to do for me and my lack of space. However, I'm nuts about Pretty Lady. I need a large bloomed HT with long stems for bouquet making. This is something I've neglected, and she would fill the bill, I think. And Polarnacht is so fabulous. It can certainly compete with the roses. Diane...See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
