Best Purple for SoCal Valleys?
Comments (8)I'm not in your area, though I do live in California where I've gardened for the last 30 years. I live in the San Francisco East Bay area, where summer temps are c. 10 degrees warmer than in the city of San Francisco, and we receive 3-4 months of annual continual drought. Summers here have temps more often in the 80's F. than 90's F. I've only grown one purple rose that I've been happy with, because it blooms more purple than red, the growth habit is lovely, wider than tall and slightly arching: Forestville Purple Pom-Pom. It thrives where 'Reine des Violettes' did not. I was pleasantly surprised when it bloomed so early, near where Glendora has not even formed tiny rosebuds yet . Forestvillle Purple Pom-Pom' has a lovely fragrance. and it bloomed fully in mid-March even though it had outgrown its pot and was root bound. I planted it near the front of a rosebed where it has lots of room to spread, and where it receives some filtered shade in the afternoon to keep it from crisping. I really love this rose!!! Thank you to Jeri Jennings who sang its praises to me after I complained that Belle Sultane blooms more red than mauve in my garden. Lux...See Morerose color to compliment purple/mauves
Comments (14)Thanks everyone so much! I guess I am FINALLY coming to understand color complements...I have lots of purple runner bean vine, purple butterfly bush, some kind of purple/black caladium and the purple/chartreuse sweet potato vines. Lots of lavender/hot pink cleome, hot pink/chartreuse zinnias and verbena boniarensis.I planted roses for the first time this year and have mostly whites/pinks/reds. I'm in Zone 6 in Nashville with a microclimate closer to 7 probably. I haven't had hardly any disease issues and I haven't sprayed....i guess it's just beginner's luck. I AM feeding and watering them like crazy! I'd love any suggestions for fragrant vigorous free flowering roses good in a vase and any photos or links to photos would be great....See MoreBest purple clematis
Comments (4)Colors are very subjective and "best" is always a matter of opinion but I'd consider 'Lasurstern' more of a lavender-blue rather than a true purple. But I guess it depends on the effect you are looking for :-) It would look great growing amidst a bright yellow rose (btw, did you mean 'Graham Thomas'?.....I've never heard of 'David Graham'). I prefer some that have a darker, richer color - 'Etoile Violette', 'Gipsy Queen', 'Romantica' or 'Negritjanka'. And there is the always popular 'Jackmanii' or 'Jackmanii Superba' - not quite as intense but very reliable and very floriferous. In my previous garden, I had 'Etoile Violette' growing through my 'Graham Thomas' rose and it was a stunning combination. I've attached a link to a previous discussion on this forum about purple clems.....maybe that will provide additional choices. And if you are planting both the rose and the clematis at the same time, you can plant them quite close together - in the same large, enriched planting hole if you like. Otherwise, you will need to allow sufficient distance so as not to disturb the rose's root system. Here is a link that might be useful: purple clematis...See MoreSuggestions on best purple and best yellow daylilies
Comments (17)I put in a large DL bed in one go a number of years ago. I looked for a good mix of Early, mid and late season bloomers. You are warm enough to even look for repeat bloomers. Purples and Pinks are a little difficult to photograph to their true color so look in more then one site to compare the color of a favorite to see if it looks like the color you want "most times" I also looked on "Tinkers" data base as those photos come from gardeners not sellers. Many purples will look plum or reddish purple. If you want a blue purple look for the word blue in the written description of the variety. If you get a chance to go to a local DL farm in person, do research ahead of your trip. See if you can get the farms list ahead of time and look up the ones you are interested in on Tinkers. http://www.daylilydb.com/ When you visit a DL farm the color you see that day may not be exactly what you get in your garden. The time of day, the temperature, the conditions on the farm effect the color. I live near a DL farm " Cottage Gardens Daylilies" in Medina NY. I bought a number of DLs on a cool day after an early morning rain. They looked true purple to me that day. When grown in my garden they were Maroon, burgundy, wine colors , not the blue purple I saw that day. This is not to make things more complicated for you, just my experience shared. That is one of the good things about doing a big bed, there is room for all shades of color. Good luck and have fun!...See Moresabalmatt_tejas
