Duchesse de Brabant or Mrs. B. R. Cant?
Comments (8)I have both. DdB, one of my favorite teas, is a prolific bloomer all season but the thrips took their toll this spring. My Mrs. B.R. Cant must be a dud. I've had it for almost three years and it's a beautiful bush and huge but I haven't had a handful of decent blooms since it's been here. I'm seriously considering removing it in favor of something else. I don't know what other teas you have but some that do very well for me in z8MS are Madame Antoine Mari, Georgetown Tea, Monsieur Tillier and Gilbert Nabonnand....See MoreDuchess de Brabant and perle d or

Having the perfect height and wafting scent, PdO would be a beautiful rose for either side of a gate. I put crape myrtles on either side of our pasture gate years ago, and now REALLY wish I had gone with fragrant roses instead…but once you have an established crape myrtle, you have it for life…not easy to move or kill. Would be a shame to move your PdO, but it doesn’t look happy. You have one on the other side that has the same type cane damage? Maybe pot them up for this year in a more protected spot to see if they recover. You could then move the pots back to either side of the gate next year to see how they do before replanting. That would give you an idea of whether it is the location PdO doesn’t like or if yours were just weaklings that needed some extra care at first. Hard to tell from the picture, but your DdB doesn’t look too bad to me…small, but still a good bit of healthy cane once you prune off the bad? My DdB seems to be more cold tender than most of my other teas and slower to recover from it. Mine really shot up last year, though, after barely growing at all the year before and starting last season off as a one foot stick. If yours is healthy, you may want to give it another season there to see what it does....See MoreWhat would you put in between Duchess du Brabant and Belinda's Dream?
Comments (23)Carol, yes, the teas have an ineffable delicacy and refinement both in form and color. I want as many of them as I can fit in my now extremely limited sunny space. But Chinas will put up more with less than ideal conditions. I think my last frontier will be Chinas. I will be putting them in some very iffy spaces. I love Austins. I had not previously considered a comparison with Starbucks (I confess I have never entered a Starbucks willingly and on my own unless it was with a gift card that somebody gave me). But you do bring up an important point. It was Abraham Darby, 20 years ago, that started me on this trip. He was the one who led me to antiques. Without him, I am not sure if I would have ended up here! Although we have not one but three great OGR nurseries within a 90 minute drive, they do not advertise. You need to know a lot to even know that they exist. And how did I learn about Abraham Darby in the first place? I think it must have been an article in Vogue about a high end cosmetics company (Chantecaille) that was making a perfume based on his scent. How shameful! I used to read Vogue. I am not that person anymore. But the article made me drool, and I drove down to Apopka and bought him from Nelson's. I love Austins because they smell great, they look great, they are far more interesting than hybrid teas, and when grafted on R. fortuniana they start producing immediately, unlike my own-root antiques that will take 3 years to show me what they can really do. Patience has never been a forte with me. But I am not really a fan of the business practices. I guess if I had integrity I would vote with my pocketbook and boycott them. As of now I have 21 Austins. I have plans for more. I hope that at some point I will cancel those plans....See MoreQuery: Mercury Rising, Duchesse de Brabant, Roald Dahl?
Comments (33)Vaporvac - yes -- I do mail order from Annie's (too often, I'm afraid). The shipping is expensive, but things always arrive healthy and well packed for me. One time the delivery truck delayed a day in the middle of a heatwave, and the poor plants fried in the truck, so Annie's re-sent all the ones I told them were damaged. I had sent photos to show them what I got. I ordered both Duchesse de Brabant and Grandmother's Hat last night. I'll stick them in pots and wait 'til next year to plant them in the garden, probably. Who knows, really. I seem to change my mind willy-nilly these days. I went out and bought a 2nd Princesse Charlene de Monaco at the last minute yesterday and put it in the spot where I had just dug up my Red Baron peach tree... I'm still waiting on my bare root Scentuous and Julie Andrews roses....See MoreHU-45580804
