Poll on Duchesse de Brabant
Comments (47)With 35 reports thus far, here are the results. I did not ask about some suggested key identifiers, which are shown in bold. If you can confirm their existence on your Duchesse de Brabant, it would be interesting. I don't yet have a confirmed petal shape. If anyone has any leftover petals, flatten a typical petal under a book and describe the shape. I suspect that these are typically cuneate (wedge-shaped). Leaves open wrinkled and then smooth as they mature. Leaf margins are slightly wavy. Leaf texture is thin. Powdery mildew in coastal and central valley of California and in damp spring. Prickles beneath on petiole (mid-rib of leaf). Prickles on canes are scattered. Bloom form is globular (fewer petals) to cupped (more petals). Stamen: filaments are white to cream, anthers dark amber when fresh. Petal color is medium pink with cream to white centers, probably cuneate (wedge-shaped). Petals count: median 54 total, with range from 86-21. For those with a hand lens, the sepal margins are glandular ciliate. More than half report strong/fruity Tea fragrance. Some cannot detect Tea or did not report. Plants often grow to 8 ft. x 8 ft. Feel free to confirm this description or distinguish your plants if you haven't already described each of these characteristics. I would like to report these results to Billy West, one of the Teabags from Oz....See MoreHow tall: Duchesse de Brabant, Marie d'Orleans & Belindas Dream?
Comments (7)Similar in height after years of growing out and training to that size, maybe. Belinda's Dream with a touch of mid-day shade is 4 1/2 to 5 feet tall with those long flower stems after 3 years in the ground. Duchesse de Brabant wants to be 6 x 8 or b x 8 x 4 if you have deer doing the pruning. Oh...but I wonder if ARE sells the same Duchesse we grow out here. I seem to recall seeing a rose with many more petals, and our Duchesse is a cupped job that is just semi-double to double....See MoreBelindas dream or Mrs B R Cant?
Comments (19)Ingrid, I was just deadheading and tidying Mme. Joseph Schwartz a week ago (in the Sac Cemetery), and she has, to my nose, more of a Bourbon fragrance than a Tea fragrance. And the Duchesse has always smelled like a Bourbon to me. I love the Tea fragrance, but the Bourbon one has always been too much for my poor, put-upon nose, so I don't last very long working on them. Another rose, right next to MJS, is Mistress Bosanquet, and it smells like a Bourbon also. I wonder if these roses have Bourbon roses in their ancestry? Of course, it may just be a particular Old Rose fragrance, and not Bourbon at all - I'm no expert. Laura...See MoreHave: Perle d'or, SDLM, Belinda's Dream, Carefree Beauty for trade:
Comments (12)Lilyfinch, sorry for the delay in responding..I would love Duchess Interested in Cornelia and Francesca too! Let me know exactly what you want. My babies are potted up and growing well, but I do want to wait until it cools off more. I am in South Ga and haven't been to Nashville in a million years! My daughter best friend is doing an internship there this summer, but she is gonna head straight back to UGA from there. My twin lives in Cumming, which is North Ga. She was diagnosed with cancer last year and I do make trips to see her....See Morecedemas
