Wonderful suggestions, Chris!

I have Maggie and she is nearby--maybe 10 feet from this particular spot.

I looked at Nur Mahal and really wanted her (in fact, your suggestion made me drool) but only the 2-gallon size was available and none of her leaves looked very healthy so I went with Souvenir de Francois Gaulain instead. To my nose he is one of the most heavenly and strongly scented teas ever. Since he might ultimately pass 7 feet and get leggy, I will put Clementina Cabonieri in front of him. That will give the people strolling by a nice double gift should they stop to smell!

I also got Papa Gontier, another reddish tea, maybe not as heavily scented as SDFG. He has the potential to get enormous so he will go in the backyard.

Next trip, I will get Gloire des Rosomanes and all the Chinas on my wishlist.

Christopher makes great suggestions! Red will look wonderful in between DdB and BD. It all sounds beautiful, Cedemas! DdB may be my favorite Tea.

I grew up with Chinas in TX, and really appreciate them. The color of the red ones, like Cramoisi Superieur, carries from a distance and looks absolutely charming up close. Perle d'Or is a sweetly flowered, delicately colored workhorse which grows in my current front bed. I love the history of Parson's Pink./Old Blush. I have.a soft spot for it and grew it at my last garden. It reminds me of both Ingrid's porcelain and rustled roses from old cemeteries and farmhouses. Carol

Carol, about 20 years ago, when I first bought the house, I put a hedge of Old Blush in the same spot. It was a good choice--always in bloom, reliable, and never a problem (until I quit watering and feeding--they lingered for a few years after that, then declined, and one day the gardeners weed wacked them to oblivion).

This time I wanted something prettier, with better flower form and scent.

I still love Chinas, and they will be my last major purchase for this year.

I go to Rose Petals Nursery every month during Open Garden Day and get basically as much as will fit in the car. Each month I have had a different obsession. Next month it will be Chinas. But I will have to get creative as to placement because I am running out of places to put them. Good thing that many of them are shade-tolerant!

Oh. That's another thing we have in common. I did not grow up in Texas but I did live in Clear Lake City in the early 80s.

Carol, how nice that you remembered my Chinese antique porcelain. Here is a plate from the 18th century from China meant for the European market and decorated with roses and other flowers.

Your China is lovely Ingrid. Just precious.

Ingrid, love the flowers n colours. It is European influence yet I have never seen anything like that. Wow.

It all looks so elegant and beautiful, Ingrid. Can you use the tea tray for iced tea? Maybe it is not wise to use such precious antiques. I think my husband would break everything, but I love your beautiful home.

Ingrid I can see why you have a passion for collecting Chinese antique porcelain, it’s simply beautiful and you have a lovely home, it’s very serene and peaceful looking. I’m afraid my mischievous little pups would reak havoc and break everything lol.

Sheila and boncrow, I'm glad you like the porcelain and my home. We've had small (adult) dogs and they never bothered anything, and now we have only one cat so there's never been a problem. I'm not about to keep anything hidden away, as some collectors do (especially those in areas prone to earthquakes who keep a lot of their porcelain wrapped up and in boxes under the bed). Some like to display just a few items at a time, each one often worth thousands of dollars, and rotate their collection. I have to have it all around me where I can admire it every day. Sheila, the tea tray is very small and one of my most valuable pieces, so I have it securely hanging on a wall. It's funny, but even collectors who may have a dozen gorgeous vases never put flowers in them; for that they're more likely to use a water glass!

Ingrid, thank you for the photos! Your Chinese porcelain collection is incredibly beautiful, extensive and diverse. I see what I can only describe as carefully chosen, intimate pieces which have been collected over a lifetime. They are as delicate and historical as China roses. Now, every time I spot a piece of antique Chinese porcelain I think of you. If I spot a piece of antique Chinese porcelain decorated with roses, I think of you doubly. I noticed a Martha Washington chest in one of your photos. My grandmother had one just like it! My sister has our grandmother's chest in her home now, but it doesn't display anything so lovely as yours. I think it's currently piled with books and sewing. :-)

Cedemas, I love that you once grew a hedge of Old Blush, but I also celebrate your new collection of Teas, Bourbons, Austins and others. Your garden is going to be gorgeous! Tea Roses and Bourbons are not 100% thrilled with the Portland climate, but I grow a few, probably for the same reasons you do. Their graceful blooms are truly sublime in the way that Victorian and Edwardian antiques are sublime. Their blooms carry the essence of an aesthetic which speaks to pre Raphaelites and fans of Art Nouveau and many carry a scent which makes me believe that I really should stop and smell the roses. To this day, I admire new and older DA cultivars for the antique style of their blooms, their remontancy and their complex and delicious aromas. DA is to roses what Starbucks is to coffee. DA brilliantly cornered a piece of the market by creating some really wonderful new-old roses while simultaneously reigniting the gardening world's interest in old roses in general. I wish Abe Darby weren't so disease prone here. His blooms are positively scrumptious, but alas, his canes are but defoliated sticks. Please DO post photos when you get things installed, and please DO let us know what else you decide to add to your beds. Nova recommends rose beds as an elegant backdrop for collie portraits. :-) Carol

What about the china ‘Napoleon’? Mine isn’t blooming right now, but it has both the light and dark pinks? It smelled lovely, too!

I decided not to go with Napoleon this time because in my opinion, he is essentially Old Blush but with better scent and I wanted to try something different. Although I have to admit, Old Blush did a great job when I took care of him.

Carol, yes, the teas have an ineffable delicacy and refinement both in form and color. I want as many of them as I can fit in my now extremely limited sunny space. But Chinas will put up more with less than ideal conditions. I think my last frontier will be Chinas. I will be putting them in some very iffy spaces.

I love Austins. I had not previously considered a comparison with Starbucks (I confess I have never entered a Starbucks willingly and on my own unless it was with a gift card that somebody gave me). But you do bring up an important point.

It was Abraham Darby, 20 years ago, that started me on this trip. He was the one who led me to antiques. Without him, I am not sure if I would have ended up here!

Although we have not one but three great OGR nurseries within a 90 minute drive, they do not advertise. You need to know a lot to even know that they exist.

And how did I learn about Abraham Darby in the first place? I think it must have been an article in Vogue about a high end cosmetics company (Chantecaille) that was making a perfume based on his scent. How shameful! I used to read Vogue. I am not that person anymore. But the article made me drool, and I drove down to Apopka and bought him from Nelson's.

I love Austins because they smell great, they look great, they are far more interesting than hybrid teas, and when grafted on R. fortuniana they start producing immediately, unlike my own-root antiques that will take 3 years to show me what they can really do. Patience has never been a forte with me. But I am not really a fan of the business practices. I guess if I had integrity I would vote with my pocketbook and boycott them. As of now I have 21 Austins. I have plans for more. I hope that at some point I will cancel those plans.

Perle d'Or would be great between the two pinks, and the luscious dainty foliage would be a nice contrast. Or maybe... Jean Bach Sisley?

Barbarag, I have both of them! Perle d'Or is just behind the spot I was thinking about. JBS is in the backyard.

Ingrid , you have such beautiful collections of Antiques. How did you achieve all that pieces ? They are absolutely BEAUTIFUL. and you display them really well. You have a beautiful place and thank you for sharing your interior with us. I am amazed by the beauty of your China's, cabinets and all . They fall perfectly well together. I love those tall vases too.

Cedemas , I think any color will look great even white rose btw them or red or whichever you like.

You have so many roses and I am sure you have a few on your mind. So which one are you picking ?

Then put in some companion plants to have the wow effect even purple or blue or whatever you like. I think it will be great in whatever you do. It will be beautiful.

So sorry, I thought I already wrote what I decided to put there. It must have been in another thread. I actually got three new roses to put there. Clementina Cabonieri for the front part of the space, Souvenir de Francois Gaulian just behind her (he will be leggy and Clementina will cover up his naked legs), and Perle d'Or just to the left of Souvenir de Francois Gaulain.

Great choices, Cedemas. I can’t wait to see all your pictures when everyone is in place.

I have no idea about distances involved but your two roses get so big, seems like a third in the middle would be chocked out.

If that’s not the case, my preference would be a very pastel pink, or a very bright pink (not red) so the effect is a sea of variegated pinks.
