How tall: Duchesse de Brabant, Marie d'Orleans & Belindas Dream?

Well I finished the "pink" flower bed this weekend in my mom's zone 7b/8a "organic" rose garden (I'm so sore!). All that remains is to construct the rose wells and plant the roses. The bed is long and rectacular, will have a lavender/rosemary border, with enough space in the middle for three roses. I've got DUCHESSE DE BRABANT, MARIE D'ORLEANS & BELINDAS DREAM coming from the Antique Rose Emporium any day now. In the descriptions I've read in a couple of online catalogs all three roses are similar in height. Has this been your experience? Obviously, I want the taller roses in the back and the shorter cultivers in the front.

My mother's 6 year old totally neglected Duchesse de Brabant is six feet tall by about 4 feet. It never gets pruned except for trimming off the hips every once in a while. She cares for it by throwing kitchen scraps under it and an occasional bucket of "dirty water" from the rinse cycle of her laundry machine. Mine is one year old and already 4' tall. I had a Belinda's Dream that was much more manerly, about 4 feet tall.

Similar in height after years of growing out and training to that size, maybe. Belinda's Dream with a touch of mid-day shade is 4 1/2 to 5 feet tall with those long flower stems after 3 years in the ground. Duchesse de Brabant wants to be 6 x 8 or b x 8 x 4 if you have deer doing the pruning. Oh...but I wonder if ARE sells the same Duchesse we grow out here. I seem to recall seeing a rose with many more petals, and our Duchesse is a cupped job that is just semi-double to double.

Sorry for the delayed response. (I spent the afternoon and early eve planting veggie/flower seeds. Wanted to get going before the windy/cooler weather arrives Sunday.) Because you are posting on this forum I'll assume you are looking for modern rose suggestions. I certainly don't have the knowledge or experience the majority of forum members here have but at present I have around 140 roses including antique, OGR and modern. I've found "Reine des Violettes" which is smooth-stemmed and has springy supple canes very easy to train. For best bloom, I'd peg it so the canes arch and are pegged to the ground or tied to the lower parts of each cane so that each cane becomes covered with roses. If your area is shaded, I'd choose a white rose to be more visible, and Alba Semi-Plena because it is quite shade tolerant. "Alba Semi-Plena" is my favorite Alba, and I love every part of it, from its' fit-for-a- fairy -tale white roses with gold bosses, and "luxerious" blue-green foliage, that is usually bullet proof against disease. It also bears ornamental red rosehips that are flagon shaped. Altogether a beautiful plant. No re-bloom, however. I use its very attractive foliage all season long in bouquets with other roses and flowers. This would be my first choice for your space. I'd espalier it to fit its' plot so it grows as tall as possibe, c. 5 feet wide and narrow from front to back. "Stanwell Perpetual" is a prickly demon, with angelic flowers, that I love dearly, but I'm planning to move it to a hillside where it can enjoy solitude and cease to rip the hems of my dresses off, when I walk by it. Patrick, What a wonderful gift to your mother and sister, and loving tribute to your late dad! It's one thing to dream up a grand project like that, and quite another to labour at it month after month, as you have done. And you have such good taste! Your lyrical descriptions have sustained me while waiting for my first Molineux buds to open, and I have saved for reference your treatise on fragrant roses. You are so right about The McCartney Rose, it's a monster! I hope you will not regard it as bad etiquette to add pictures to your post, but I would like to dedicate these photos of McCartney to your huge heart and enterprise. This plant has been in the ground since 2005, I can't imagine what your mum's bush was like! All them "official" books were written in England -- and they just don't speak to the way things grow in the American South and SouWest. You'll have a lot better luck with the "Tea Bags" book -- "TEA ROSES: Old Roses for Warm Gardens." (Authors, the "Tea Bags" -- Lynne Chapman, Noelene Drage, Di Durston, Jenny Jones, Hillary Merrifield, and Billy West) This is the book we wished for, for years. The ladies from Oz did a great job. And their Australian conditions are more like what we're used to. Also, check Mike Shoup's books: Landscaping With Antique Roses, and The Empress Of The Garden. Some things I know -- Coastal SoCal -- far cooler than you are, and foggy much of the year. Occasionally (as today) hot and desert-dry. Ducher *** A friend in NoCal found a white rose near an old Chapel, because it blooms mightily through the winter, she SN it "White Christmas." But it's Ducher, right enough. It seems to grow slowly at first, and she said for a long time it was about 4-ft. THEN, she put a fence behind it, and it shot up to 8 ft.! That is exactly my experience with them. To go from tallest to shortest it should be the Duchesse then Marie d'Orleans and finally Belindas Dream. My Duchesse reached just over six feet tall by four feet wide. Marie d'Orleans is a five foot rose, maybe four feet wide. A mature plant at Vintage Gardens was the same size.

My suggestion will be same as Lance's. DdB can be 6ft tall and 5ft wide, MdO can be 5ft tall and 4ft wide, and BD can be 4ft wide and 4ft wide. They are the maximum size I would go and they still look tidy. DdB and BD are very dense shrub, on the other hand, MdO is airly.

In your zone, Duchesse may not attain the heights being reported here from warmer zones. I think your trio will work, with Duchesse in the middle. Boy, would I love to see a picture of this combination. Promise you'll report back to us, OK?

DdB is between 5 and 6 ft tall and around 8 ft wide for me. I don't have the other ones.

Patrick, in my garden, Belinda's Dream was 6 ft tall, and not quite as wide.

Having Belinda's Dream and Duchesse de Brabant in the same garden is going to produce heavenly scent & non-stop blooms. Great choice!
