Garage entry door
Comments (5)HMI and Provia make excellent steel doors and Therma Tru is a good door and the lowest quality door I would recommend. The flush doors from your garage to the house will need to be fire rated with a metal frame by code and these companies will have them available as well. I suggest buying from either a either a window and door dealer or a real lumberyard NOT a box store (HD, Lowes, etc)....See MoreGarage entry door or window?
Comments (24)This type of door is nice but not necessary. Whether it's worthwhile needs to be considered in relation to the whole project. Few of us can afford ALL the "oh, that'd be so nice" items that are available to us, and it's all too easy to ask, "Do I want it?" . . . When the real question should be, "Is this small addition worth the cost?" I'd say consider all those other extras -- built-ins, upgraded lighting, artisan tile, extra large closets, vaulted ceilings, whatever else -- and ask which of these things will bring you the most enjoyment and the most value for your dollar....See MoreSteel garage entrance door-replace or reuse?
Comments (3)The door can be cut down and capped with a door sweep that cups over both sides of the door. To fill the space between the door and original subfloor, get a taller threshold and adjust so that the weather strip on the bottom of the door sweep contacts the treshold to keep dust and critters (bugs) out. Painting a steel door isn't a big deal but what a lot of folks are doing with steel doors out here is having them powder coated. Probably a little overkill in your case since the door isn't subjected to the outside elements. Ask over at the paint forum for advise on painting the steel door. If you do decide to replace, donate the old door to habitat for humanity or a similar used building supply in your area. Dont landfill it. Another avenue is to donate it to a scrap/recycle yard. Out here, ours donates money to the school system from donated recyclables....See MoreWhat size garage for two 12' garage doors?
Comments (44)You might also want a "people" door from the garage to the outside, ... perhaps between two 12' doors, so you'd want six feet in between the two 12' doors and another six feet at least one each side. ... perhaps alongside the house between house and car leading to ?back? or ?front? door ... in which case you need to allow walking space for that. If your garage will have your cars parking with the house to one side, then, budget and lot/landscaping/driveway permitting, of course, something else to consider might be to add a back door to one of your garage slots so you can literally drive all the way thru as if it were an open carport. On that kind of garage (that could have a drive thru feature, whether or not it does), something else I like (but have seldom seen), is to have a small unheated breezeway between car and house -- a small "room" between garage and house with a window facing the front and a door facing the back -- both with screens -- and a ceiling fan or two. That breezeway doubles as a space for a door from the garage to both the house and to the exterior without going thru the house or making room for a second "people" door to enter/exit the garage AND it enables you to have a space to catch/remove fumes and smells from the garage before they enter the house. You really don't want either car or lawnmower exhaust in any part of the house, even the mud room. It is also a place to park a bike or two or a leaf blower or snow blower or hooks for heavy wet coats to enable them to air dry before bringing them into the house....See More- 2 years ago
