For a mild amount, I would suggest painting your bathroom a dramatic color, adding a large piece of art over the toilet, wallpaper or stencil the ceiling, and adding a light fixture. We had a really bad experience with Merola's hex tiles, so I wouldn't recommend them. The batch we had were really poor quality and all improperly set on the mesh--our tiler finally refused to continue with them when they kept shattering when cut and he was constantly having to pull them off to reset them. We replaced them with a similar tile from a local tile shop that ended up costing about the same for the project since they sold it by the square foot, while Merola is sold by the case. So while I like that pattern, I'd look around for other makers of it, even if the initial cost per square foot might look higher. Especially if you plan to tile it yourself, you will get that cost back in not having to reset everything a million times. For the medicine cabinet, I'd look for something similar just without the side lights, and recessed. There are a bunch out there with the same general mid-century aesthetic--then you can wire sconces on the side instead of the attached lights and have better overall lighting while keeping the general look/feel of the era.
