Redoing front bed
Comments (2)Viridis has become almost a generic term for green laceleaf Japanese maples. That's not a bad thing, but there may be better green dissectums. I have a Viridis that I planted nearly 10 years ago. It was originally in a sunny location but its leaves burned from the sun. So I moved it to a shadier spot, where it has thrived. Mine is about 4' tall and 6-7' wide now. Nice bright green leaves in spring/summer and gold in the fall. Some other nice green dissectum varieties to look for include Waterfall, Lemon-Lime Lace, Filigree, Emerald Lace. Waterfall seems to be very popular in the nurseries lately and easy to find. However, if the nurseries in your area just stock Viridis, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if it's a nice tree....See MoreMaking the Most of an Unfortunate Room
Comments (21)A vote for simple neutral fresh white walls to match the mouldings -- and create a cohesive look to the room. Same idea with the window covering -- basic creamy white soft roman blinds. I can recommend adding a white-painted wood cornice above the windows (that would cover the top moulding) to "fool the eye" in thinking that the windows (and therefore the ceiling) are "taller" ... we did that here -- and it really works well ...... And if you do choose a new bed -- perhaps a cream or white headboard (whether painted or fabric-covered) And I do like your lamp -- perhaps a pair of those -- one for each person? And white painted side tables -- of any sort that would fit! :)...See MoreWhat do you think of beds in front of a window?
Comments (10)Well, I went and did some measuring. One window wall is completely out, because in order for the closet door to open, the bed would have to be squished into the corner. I really don't like it when a bed has one long side against the wall, so that's out. The other wall has 49" of wall, then 41" of window (including the molding around the window), then another 58" of wall. The bed is a full-size bed, so it's 54 inches wide. The trouble is that I need to be able to use the window. There's no air conditioning in the house, so the cross ventilation at night is needed in the summer to cool things down. As for hanging drapes all across the wall, I'm having a hard time picturing that look in this room--that has always seemed to me to be a more modern treatment and this is an older house and I have a fairly traditional style. Also, there are concerns about hanging drapery hardware on slightly crumbly 100+ year old plaster walls. I hung a 20 pound mirror with special plaster wall hangers rated to 50 pounds and the hangers pulled out of the wall. I like the link Tuesday 2008 posted. They balanced the window on one side with the tall mirror on the other. I think I'm going to have to play around with things to see if I can create a look that is visually balanced, even if it is off center. Or as we say around here, half a bubble off plumb. I need to put my thinking cap on and consider all aspects of this. If anyone else has any ideas, please feel free to chime in....See MoreIs it weird to put a high bed in front of a window..?
Comments (5)Here are a few insp pics with the bed in front of the window for you to review. ^metal headboard and footboard. The tan window treatments look like the bottom up/top down type, but it works because of the drapes IMO....See MoreMich Williams
