Mesquite powder uses

Louiseab here. I bought some mesquite powder by mistake, thinking it was mesquite seasoning. Head slap! Anyway, I have searched but I still don’t know what to do with it. it sounds kind of sweet, but my intent was for a savoury use. Like chinese chicken wings. For that, could I just add it instead of honey or sugar.?

What are the ingredients? Is it mesquite protein powder? Mesquite smoke powder? Something else?

Plain powdered mesquite pod has 1 gram protein per 5g, or 20% protein which is pretty good for plant protein, but does also include some rounding error. It also has a gram of sugar and a gram of fiber (and, again rounding error). Taste it. People usually use it as a mild sweetener sprinkled on food (e.g., cereal), or stirred into stews, dressings, or shakes, and vegans use it as a protein/nutrition boost. You could use it in a chicken sauce, but texturally it's going to be different from sugar or honey, so you'll probably have to tinker with it.

Mesquite smoke powder is great for giving a smokey flavor. Use sparingly. Great in sauces and dressings.

If you don't actually want it, consider passing it to someone who does want it rather than leaving it to moulder in the back of a cupboard.

I go through a bit of it. About a pound a year. It is in a few of my spice blends.

The powder is from the seed pods. Not sugary sweet but fragrant like honey/molassas.

We prefer more savory spice blends so if you like sweet sticky wings or bbq, you will need to add sweeter sugars.

Here is a blend and ingredients.

Ingredients
Organic paprika powder, organic cumin seed powder, organic garlic granules, organic onion granules, organic mesquite powder, smoked sea salt, organic red chili roasted powder, organic chipotle powder, organic rosemary leaf, organic marjoram, organic sage leaf, organic black pepper powder, and organic yellow mustard seed ground.

Take a tBsp of your mesquite and add a few other spices you have on hand from the list. I don't use salt or the garlic/onion, (prefer salting later, and prefer fresh garlic/onion in my stovetop sauces)

Equal parts paprika, cumin, coriander, and mesquite...then about a tsp of the rest. My blends follow a loose recipe but always good. I don't bother shopping if i am low on a spice.

Dry rub/brine on a burger, chicken, pork, etc and grill, bake, braise, or cast iron sear.

Around here, they generally collect the grounds all the time in the summer because people are always looking for them. But come winter, they stop because no one asks for them. I let my SB know that I was going to be coming in every day, and I have been doing just that all winter. It took them a week or two to realize I was serious, but since then they've been very good about saving them for me. I get 2 5gal pails a day, usually full, or close to it. We have a 4 pail system (2 are mine, 2 theirs) and I just swap them daily. In fact, I usually just help myself if they're busy (but I always try to thank them). I understand they have another regular over the summer, so we'll see what happens then :o) Anyway, if SB is close to where you live and it's practical to go regularly, try and set up a regular pick up. Over the supper hour is a good time as they're usually slow then. I think persistent but polite is the best policy... Good Luck Tim

Basically, it's a waste of time. You won't get enough nitrogen to be worth the energy it takes to collect the seeds and scarify them for sprouting. If you just scatter them they won't sprout for years. What your vegetables need is planting on the Phoenix AZ planting calendar - not the seed company's - drip irrigation, and thick mulch (6 inches of shredded palo verde and mesquite branches) to help retain soil moisture. I took my dirt patch from digging holes with a pickaxe to being able to dig anywhere in the bed with a trowel with just thick mulch, semi-finished compost, and drip irrigation. If you want to improve the soil, plant okra. It loves the heat, has deep spreading roots, and it's edible. After the plants stop producing, cut them off at ground level and leave the roots to rot. You can even use okra to shade other vegetables, such as chilis, that prefer afternoon shade. Plant the okra along the south and west of the bed and the less sun loving plants on the NW side of the okra. Hi Mama, Yes, the bucket of Tide is Vietnamese--with a touch of Downey I think. I wished I had a spot to store it. I had to pass on that too, darn it. I don't have much storage in my house. It might be a good detergent based on the Vietnamese Ariel Greeny sent me. Gosh that was good stuff in my water. As for the powder ALL, I ordered that from Amazon several months ago and I have good results with it in my TL. If I do a light pre-wash with a sprinkle of ALL and then a hot wash/soak of my kitchen/cleaning rags, everything is clean clean clean. Better visual results with powdered ALL than powder Mexican Ariel with my very dirty cleaning rags. I use ALL on hubby's t-shirts and such too. I think Greeny said once it had one, maybe two enzymes. I suspect my water and ALL get along nicely. Anyhow, it works as well for me as powder Tide, but I'm not sure why since Tide has more enzymes. Dadoes, I agree. Foca can be VERY sudsy. If my load of whites is dirty enough, the suds are manageable here. I would think the down dosing for a front loader might lead to not being able to use enough detergent to get the load clean though. I wonder if the Roma is as good as Foca or powder Tide? I've not used that one before.

Re the extra hole - don't bother. One is adequate. Plants don't care if it takes 6 minutes vs 60 seconds for a pot to drain. More holes affect only the speed with which the pot drains, not how fully it drains. IOW, if you have 1 hole in the pot bottom and a 4" perched water column at container capacity (the amount of water remaining in the pot at the point in time where a fully saturated medium has just stopped draining) and you add 5 or 10 more holes, you'll still have a 4" perched water column at container capacity, which = no return for the extra effort. The best place for a drainage hole is through the bottom AT the sidewall. That way, if needed, you can remove a lot of excess water by tipping the pot. This one will be a bit sweeter using a different extration method.

But since you were intending to purchase a spice blend, i would use it to make one of your own or add it to an existing spice blend you already have.
