Which home looks nicer?
Comments (87)I'd go with the Charcoal shutters and I agree with someone else's post about a dark green would be nice too. I also am not a fan of red mulch. Mostly because like others have said the ground isn't red and if it is, then pine straw is a much nicer mulch than red mulch. Plus, compost mulch or triple shredded brown hardwood mulch breaks down and adds nutrients to your soil. Red mulch is often made of shredded pallets and crates because it needs to be a lighter wood in order to dye to the proper red color. This is not wood that will break down and be valuable to your soil. Many times these pallets etc are treated with chemicals to preserve the wood and you're introducing that to your garden. If you do want red mulch, just buy if from a reputable source and read on the label what it is made from - they have to list that on the label. Some red mulch is made from brand new trees that are still light in color and that would be fine. Many tomato gardeners will put red mulch around their tomato plants because they feel the red color heats the ground and reflects light differently on their tomatoes. I don't know if this is true or not, but in a front yard, I'd do triple processed brown mulch. I completed a Master Gardener class this past winter so that's where I've learned about the benefits/disadvantages of different kinds of mulch....See Morehow to make cheap 70's cabinets look nicer
Comments (6)Thanks so much, y'all! Many of the things mentioned are things on the eventually "to do" list but it's nice to have my thoughts validated. Sadly, I don't think popcorn removal is a valid option for us, at l least not at this time, and I haven't convinced myself it's truly worth it. I wish we could do that throughout the whole house! I am working on cleaning up the countertops cuz they look horrible and everything is so hard to to keep clean. The kitchen is pretty much my husband's domain so getting rid of anything is a long, slow process! I tried not to show too much of it in the pictures! LOL I love the idea of hidden hinges. I will look into that. I'd love to also replace the top moulding, but I'll definitely have to look into the cost. yeah it looks cheap... like I said, 70's mobile home, LOL! Any recommendations on colors if I choose to paint? and what color hardware if I decide to change it? I'm leaning towards something colorful and bright. There is only one tiny window there, and the yard is all shaded, so not much light at all comes in....See MoreWhat should I do to make my house look more uniform
Comments (49)Ok, I understand. I was trying to just get to the point and didn't realize how helpful you all would be. I'm thankful for your consideration. My dad is an engineer and did the inspection. That being said the areas that need fixing are very obvious and I aim to do that. I have a price to take down three trees in front of the house for 1,000. The others I can handle with a chainsaw. I'll do the painting myself and have a contractor fixing the porch and putting new gutters. The contractor will also install new top cabinets in the kitchen to match the already replaced cabinets on the bottom. That's 5k. Also all the floors will be sanded and poly for about 3k. Does everyone agree that the foundation that's exposed should be dark blue to match all the shutters? I'm planning on sanding and painting the front door the same color as the shutters. I was considering putting the key stone window trim above the front windows as well. I will do a lot of the lawn maintenance myself. I am planning on replacing some of the lighting. And do consider the fans to need replacing. Does everyone agree that the columns can stay as they are? I need to see what happened to make them lean toward the road. If they can be salvaged I can save a lot of money there however I thought 10 inch pillars and a colonial railing and fence would add class to this house. The railing that's there is very water logged and they used siding that doesn't match the house....See MoreHow to make this look nicer?
Comments (13)Don't see any actual hand rails. These are comfortable for your hands and, while not fancy, look nice. https://www.lowes.com/pd/DOLLE-Prova-1-5-in-x-6-5-ft-This-Is-Unfinished-Stain-grade-Wood-Unfinished-Beechwood-Wood-Handrail/1000434309?cm_mmc=shp--c--prd--mlw--google--pla--122--sosstairparts--1000434309-_-0amp;placeholder=null&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3LHAveWA7gIVRLKGCh3XGQkyEAQYByABEgJ-BfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Do you mean that you want to do something with the pony wall at the top of the stairs? Using a bookcase as the pony wall makes for a sturdier wall. Whether you leave the shelves open or cover them with solid doors or glass doors to display family treasures (or some combination of solid and glass and open) should depend upon what you plan to do with the room. If it is to be a study hall or home office or place for board games or playing video games, the storage of adding a cabinet/bookcase to the pony wall could come in handy. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/228276274846790431/ https://www.pinterest.com/pin/3870349652242564/ How do you want/plant to use this space ?...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
