need help matching colors or flooring in kitchen
Comments (5)Thank you for the comments so far! I know I was really confused by where to even start here! No problem in sharing that color tool.. i learned alot about complimentary colors and such! and also those hex numbers can be brought to a paint store and theyll match it for you. So back to this kitchen! So in a kitchen, yes I agree warm tones are more my style for eating areas. I am wondering if I can redo the counter then with one of those counter refinishing kits..since it might be temporary if knock a wall down some time soon..the counter would eventually need replacing. Does anyone have experience with counter top refinishing? Here is a link I found with someone showing how to do it: What color would someone suggest? I am thinking about buying some birch/style cabinet doors instead of the glossy white melamine there now. Oh and if I change the countertop..now I am also going to need to do the tiles..they are also which blue/grey marble-like looking.. I will for sure share pictures..I am only moving in July so plenty of time to think and plan for now! Thanks for your tips/ideas :o) Here is a link that might be useful: countertop DIY...See MoreHelp! Need floors to match Walnut cabinets/light counters
Comments (6)We had existing white oak in the DR/LR/hallway, but not in the kitchen. We opened the wall between the kitchen and then-DR (now used as our LR) during the reno. We had thought to use a different wood species in the kitchen space, but our floor guy told us it would look better (flow better) if we used white oak in the kitchen as well. Our original floors are from 1967 or so. They were likely covered with carpeting for the first 30 years, and then re-finished prior to us purchasing the house in late 1998. They were refinished again in 2004 (we hated the finish used, so planned to have them sanded and refinished again along with the kitchen floor). The floor guys removed about 10% of the old DR floor, and weaved in the new white oak floor boards. BTW, the grade, color, etc. for the new floor boards were chosen by the floor guy to match the old floors. When the kitchen floor was first installed/finished, before the cabs, island, and LR furniture went it (think clear, empty floor space), if you stood in one corner of the then-DR and looked across the entire open space, you could just barely detect that the new floor looked a little fresher and brighter than the old (but newly refinished) floor. I am VERY detail oriented and notice a lot of the little things that others don't (blessing and curse!). Honestly, the only reason I could even tell the difference (between old and new floors) is because I was looking for it (and doing so when the rooms were completely empty). They looked, and look (even more so 3 1/2 yrs later) very well-matched and blended. If they didn't, I'd see it, and notice it every day, and this is not the case. My advice if you decide to try going the wood floor route, is find a good floor guy, ask if he can match your original red oak floors, and keep that in mind as a viable option. Good luck!...See MoreNeed some help to match my kitchen tile floor with my wood flooor
Comments (29)Gray flooring is very trendy - which means it will become the dreaded "dated". While light gray as a neutral will always be useful, the extreme over use of gray will turn on itself - just as over use of oak did. If this was a cheap laminate gray floor with a limited lifespan - no big deal (except the waste in the landfill) but you had better love this expensive floor 10 years from now when the HGTV crowd will say "yuck - look at all that gray" - just like they say "Yuck, look at all that oak" now. If you will love it, go ahead. I have my oak kitchen which I like just fine. However, a natural wood floor will add color and will go with just about any style thrown at it. It is best if one applies the trendy colors to easily changed surfaces - like paint for walls, decor, curtains, upholstery and even a backsplash if it is not a huge expense. The gray, gray rooms just looked washed out - especially when all the new design pics I am seeing are showing color....See MoreSW paint color with hint of greige. Need Help ASAP
Comments (7)How would SW Nuance look with Alabaster? It works. Mostly because they have the same amount of chroma. Which means neither will make the other look dingy/dirty. They are about the same in hue family, so hue family doesn't really play much of a part in this color relationship. Where they contrast is in terms of Value, lightness, LRV. Nuance is darker. That bump of contrast and the fact that they have the same chroma is what makes them work together. If you look at their data values, you can see what I'm talking about. You don't have to understand what all the numbers mean to make these simple comparisons highlighted in yellow. Essentially, this is the same as using the same color on walls and trim. Except Nuance is darker and you're getting a level of lightness contrast that you would not get if you used Alabaster on the walls in a different finish. Of course, using the same color in different gloss levels is always a good strategy too....See Moreolychick
