Existing down vent with new cooktop

We bought a home several months ago knowing we would want to update the kitchen. It has a in-wall oven with separate cooktop. Cooktop is electric thermador (older model) with downdraft ventilation. Cooktop is in good shape, not surprisingly, but is an older model and we are looking to upgrade to induction. So our big question is if anyone is familiar with updating to a new cooktop and connecting to the existing downdraft vent.

We don't think it will be possible to continue to use the existing downdraft vent with an updated cooktop mostly because the switches to move up/down and start fan are integrated with the existing cooktop (otherwise the downdraft is not integrated). But we would love to be told that's not the case since 36" downdraft vents certainly are not cheap.
