Should I put valances in my kitchen and family room windows?
Comments (10)OK, with two votes from Les and Squirrel, I'm going to go down to Lowes today to get more valances and rods for all windows except the transoms--plus another rod for my bedroom window. DH is going to be busy this Sat. I hope to have some results to post by Monday. I'm really not sure, though, how many panels to use--one or two. The package says for 36" and each window is 42" so if you factor in extending past the trim it will be about 48"W--too much for one panel, perhaps not enough for two, though I could always cut one in half and trim the ends. I like how it is with the dip in the center of the window, though and having more panels will have more dips. Les: We considered the other wall--but it really is not far enough to get the correct viewing distance, plus we need some clearance for the dining chairs. At this point, it would be hard to move it since between the insulation and sheerwall we needed to add to that room, all the walls are closed and I don't want to see any wires along the walls. DH had the electrician pull all kinds of $$ high tech "structured wiring" plus speaker wire so I'm afraid the TV is where it is at this point. I like the idea of having a sofa/console table, though the drop leaf tableis too wide given the dimensions of the room so the only other logical spot for it would be where the ent. center is now and we will have to see how it works once the new console comes in. I do need to do something to the back wall--not quite sure what. Given we are a family of 5 with three kids and this is where we spend the bulk of our time together, this room needs to have a more practical decor as it gets cluttered very easily. My favorite thing is the new ottoman as I can stash all kinds of stuff in there. My kids hate my new plaid cushions and are always throwing them on the floor as they find it more comfortable to sit on the sectional without them. Good thing they are washable! Here's a few other angles the show the wall and area I would like to add a small chair in case you have any other suggestions:...See MoreWindow Valance - Yeah or Nay?
Comments (13)We recently saw a posting with a gorgeous arch over a set of windows at the sink--built out of wallboard by the owner with cupboards acting as pillars at the two sides. Anyone remember which thread that was? The clever unit really made the room special. Wish I'd seen that idea sooner! I think I'm going to build valence boxes to pad with fabric over my windows. Romans will be below. probably off topic... If you choose roman shades or blinds for a multi-window unit and they're really functional, just wanted to say that you are in for a lifetime of short-term irritation when you have to raise/lower each little panel separately. There's no way around this but it's a fact of life each morning and evening. Gotta budget the time. If there is any way to gang the windows and put a single shade over more than one window at a time, it's not as pretty but it's more efficient. I have a double window in center of my 5-window config and at least I could gang that window so I only have 4 blinds to pull....See Morevalance for kitchen window?
Comments (4)I think that might be very nice. I have a post about valances up right now too. Personally, I like them to inject a little color and pattern into the room. So, I like patterned cottons, etc. If you just want a little something for interest, the seashell will be very nice. I think b/c it is so sheer, you will need to mount it right on the window--not above, like I would do with an opaque fabric. I love the seashell beads on the valance....See MoreKitchen window valance?
Comments (14)Ooohh, I, too, love your serene kitchen! Re: I agree w/ the above poster who mentioned perhaps a calming watercolor--perhaps of a field w/ some red flowers or something?? And/or you could add a simple a woven wood/bamboo shade inside-mounted in your windows, just to add a bit of texture. They could either be a natural/brown or they also have them in various shades of white... I have a sample of the color St. Lucia from this line; it is very pretty; this co. sent samples quickly: http://www.selectblinds.com/bambooblinds/tropicalisle-bamboo-shades.html The brand/line linked below has both a natural and a white option in the style "Lorena"; couldn't tell if your cabs/trim were more creamy or truer to white. Again, you can always request free samples. (Note: i have no affiliation to this co., just had good experience getting samples from them. Not ready to order my window treatments just yet, since we haven't even started our remodel. LOL) Incidentally, these specific lines of shades are available from some of the other online vendors, as well, although sometimes under a different name. If you are interested in either of them, I have the other websites saved, also, b/c sometimes one co. will be offering a different incentive or additional savings. Let me know if you would like that info; I'd be happy to send it to you. All that said, if you don't do another thing to your kitchen, its beauty can easily stand on its own, just the way it is! Congratulations on your lovely kitchen. Here is a link that might be useful: Extreme Woven Wood Shades at Select Blinds...See MoreKendrah
