Help! Having second thoughts about marble hex tile and now I'm stuck!

Hi everybody!

So I thought I finally had my bathroom figured out, but now I'm not so sure. I had chosen Bedrosian's chloe tile in baby blue for the frameless shower walls and a 2" honed carrera hex for the floor and a 1" honed carrera marble hex for the shower floor. I was so excited to be done with the tile! I am doing a white vanity with a carrera top and chrome fixtures and probably brass sconces (and maybe knobs, too). I don't know about room color.

The bathroom is small, only about 7x8 ft. But now I'm not sure about the marble. I've heard such nightmare stories. We have (literally) the softest water in the country, so I felt okay about having it, but now I'm really feeling like maybe it's a bad idea. I don't know...maybe I need to mix it up and start over? I want to stay in the blues and whites color-wise...but I'm flexible. Help and thank you!

what if you did a marble looking hex? I did that while I have actual marble on my vanity top and it looks fine together. I think this is the one I got but floor and decor actually had a few of them

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you feel that it looks real? I've looked at a couple and the ones I saw seemed a little bit too artificial looking...but the one you linked to looks really nice!

My Zephy is not hardy here in my Z5 yard, although it is only a couple years old. I got it as a band from RU a couple years ago. I think this past winter was it's third winter. It is planted on the east end of my front porch. It is in a protected location recieving the least amount of wind/weather and yet it still completely dies down to the ground each year and blooms very sporadically for me. Maybe it will improve as it matures a bit but so far it has not been hardy for me. Mine is an own root, so it comes back pretty strong each spring, but has never gotten over about 6 foot tall. It gets about 4 hours of direct sunlight per day plus another couple hours of indirect sunlight, so maybe that is part of the problem with mine. My Awakening climber, which is supposed to be a better/improved version of New Dawn has been much more hardy for me, although the bunnies did it in this past winter. They ate everything they could reach from the ground/snow so I was left with a detached 15' tall tangled thorny mess to remove from the side of my chimney. Next winter I will put up some kind of bunny proof barrier around it's feet to keep the bunnies away. :I also planted a Dublin Bay climber late last year. It was just a small own root band, so it didn't do much in the short time it was in the ground. Since it was so new and small, I did winter protect it with a rose cone. So far this spring it seems to be doing nicely. I have been training it on the lattice along the side of my deck. Hopefully that one will prove hardy for me also.

BKO, I was alerted to this thread after posting over on Decorating. Almost 2 years ago we bought my current house. The cabinets were already white, but had yellowed over time. We were in a rush, and had to paint them. I'd long been wanting yellow cabinets, but DH balked at them, and I was in too much of a hurry to flesh out the design I would have wanted, so I "caved" and just painted them white. (In my last house I had glazed cabinets, so I opted to keep these white.) I *should* have been happy. After all, I love white kitchens, and that whole sleek "Something's Gotta Give"/Christopher Peacock look is one of my favorites. However, I have saltillo floors that are very, very rustic looking. The crisp white cabinets looked great, and the saltillo floors looked great, but not together. I'm a huge fan of mixing rustic/elegant, but it just never made my heart sing. I lived with the kitchen for over a year before I decided I'd had enough. I decided I was going to paint them yellow. It didn't matter if it wasn't trendy. It didn't matter about resale. (I'm a Realtor, so that's a subject I know all too well.) It didn't matter that it would be a royal pain in the carcass, or that people kept telling me that the kitchen was not just "fine" as-is, but it was beautiful, and to leave it alone. It just didn't make my heart sing. DH and I just finished my cabinets, and now I can say 2 things: 1. They finally look like what I had envisioned, and I couldn't be happier. 2. I'm glad I waited before doing it, as it gave me time to pull together the look I wanted, rather than being rushed into it. I'd say that if after 6 months or so if you still find yourself swooning over a white kitchen, do it. You'll thank yourself *every* time you walk in. I'm shocked at how much I love my "new" kitchen, and find myself walking in there just to look at it. I just never felt that way when it was white, though it was pretty.

Thanks for all your responses! I'm really torn both ways. I'm tired of the upkeep of wood, along with having to be so many precautions to prevent scratching. I recall having to put cushions under all the sofas to ensure no gouges, along with making sure the felt tips were on all my chairs. Then there is the thing about asking that everyone remove their shoes, lest another scratch shows up. That said, their is an undeniable beauty of wood flooring. It's mostly just my DH and I (son finishing college) and a very small dog, so the daily wear and tear isn't much. We do have a lot of family get togethers though. Another issue for the hardwood is the hardness in the living room. In the house with the hardwood in the family, no one hardly ever sat on the floor (even with the padded area rug). The previous house to that and now this house which had/have carpet, I am often on the floor/carpet. I think if I were to go hardwood in the main areas, I would omit the living room for this reason alone. I LOVE getting down on the floor with the grandkids. Plus with the hardwood, I had to lay a protector under the rug, to protect the hardwood, still had problems though with fading. With tile though, I'm not sure I could use enough padding to make it as comfortable as I like (though I wouldn't have to worry about protecting the darn wood floors). The case against tile, is the cold factor. I saw where it costs about $10/sq foot for heated floors. Too pricey for me. I love some of the light color marble looking porcelain tiles. Bright, pretty and elegant. Tile goes so far away from what is mainstream in this area though scares me. Perhaps, I should get a box of tiles and spread them out and see it that way. I need new flooring so bad (crappy carpeting is pulling away at the seams even), so I shouldn't put this decision off too long.

Incorrect. The fact that something broke marble does not mean it would have broken granite. Marble is softer. I have hit my granite with worse than the back of a hammer many times, and not a mark, scratch or dent has been left behind. Marble is soft. It stains, unless you seal it with unnatural substances. It always etches, no matter what you seal it with. It chips easily. It breaks. That is what it is. If you are happy with it aging and developing scars of various types, then it's a good material for you. If that disturbs you, then another material is a better choice. Since you already have marble, you should definitely see whether it can be repaired. It may be an easy fix. But what is more important is that you reconcile yourself now to the material you have chosen. Learn to love it rather than wish it were something else. Because when this chip is fixed, there will be another.

I couldn’t find one I liked until I looked in floor and decor. I don’t know if it looks real per se but I like how it looks and I feel it looks complimentary to my vanity.

marble looking hex is my choice too. On these forums you will find threads upon threads of people with problems using marble as shower tile (floor especialy)> save yourself the headache and get porcelain instead.

Marble is porous--'hard little sponges' , per Sophie. Think what will go wrong with that on a bathroom floor.

We remodeled our small master bath 11 years ago and used 3" marble hex on the floor, with matching 2" marble hex on the the shower floor...this was all before I started reading Houzz Design Dilemmas, which means I wasn't aware of problems with marble being "hard Little sponges." After 11 1/2 years, I have had no problems whatsoever with my marble floors, either in the room itself or the shower. Both look as beautiful as ever, and there have been no other issues. I did stop coloring my hair at home, as I didn't want to worry about dyes, and I also use bath products that are clear or white whenever possible, just to be sure, but that has not been a problem. I love my shower, and especially love my honed calacatta gold countertop, tub surround and shower bench...there has been virtually no etching, as I am careful, but I am certainly not obsessive about it.

@Patricia Stern Thanks for this info. I had the same experience with black, honed granite countertops. Everyone told me not to do it, and 15 years later they still look great--and I haven't done a single thing I was supposed to do to maintain them. The rest of the kitchen? Well, not so much...but those countertops might outlive me! So thanks for your input.
