Choices made (mostly) and now I am stuck
Comments (11)Thank you for your response May_Flowers. Being thrown into two bath remodels when I had not even been considering it, plus the lives of 3 busy teenagers, I have been overwhelmed with this. This has been my inspiration photo. Right now, I have light Bottocino Fiorito marble floors, stained cabinets and white culture marble counter tops and 4x4 white shower tile with faux painted walls and ceiling. So I am basically reversing everything. [[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/los-altos-hils-formal-french-chateau-traditional-bathroom-san-francisco-phvw-vp~1945470) [Traditional Bathroom[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional-bathroom-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_712~s_2107) by Danville Interior Designers & Decorators Culbertson Durst Interiors I am going for the light stone with dark counter tops and white cabinet look. I am even doing the kick board on the cabinets as this photo does, plus the dark accents in the floor. The MOP tile I was only putting on the corner bench base in the shower as I wanted something pretty, as I have had to give up a lot of other things that were pretty from my original inspiration photo. I ordered several samples of pearl tile and this one has no blues. It is white with tan/pink tones. I should have posted before I ordered it. The online photos of rooms didn't show blues like MOP does, so I am keeping fingers crossed. when it gets here, If it looks bad,and shows more colors than in the sample, I will not go with it, but are you saying you think it is too much going on to use it on the bench only, if the whole shower is 12 x 24 travertine with the Versailles floor? Here is a photo of my slab of granite while still in the warehouse. The little sample pieces I have are not a good representation of the whole piece. The water jet mosaic I wanted to use in the tub alcove and as a back splash, was the flower one (but I don't have a sample of it yet) and used the other one just to get an idea what it would look like. Raz, Thanks for your reply. The whole alcove will be 12x24 brick laid travertine. The photoshoped line would be the border tile at the top of the trav, with a dome liner on top of the border. After reading some suggestions here and showing DH, we may just eliminate the border altogether in the alcove and back splash and do as you suggest, and just go with the dome liner on top of the travertine. Thanks for you input. I really needed some outside eyes and opinions....See MoreIf we have a white dog...then should we have a white kitchen?
Comments (36)Awwwwww, these are all soooo cute. And very well-coordinated. ; ) Our whole family oohed, ahhhed, and giggled over your posts. : ) Our Feliz (you can sing her song with me: "Feliz naughty-dog...") is a three year old poodle-something that we got a year ago. I tease that she's crossed with a fool, which makes her a "foodle". She's a *great dog and has been an incredibly good fit for our family. Believe it or not, she does occasionally peel herself off the furniture to help clean up the kitchen. She especially likes helping "pre-rinse" the dishes as they're loaded into the DW. I think we'll have to match our floors to the dirt, since fluffy white flooring is definitely out of the question. :-) I was over to the house today, tacking up all kinds of paint chips. We're going to have to repaint pretty much everything downstairs, so it'll be a fresh start. Everywhere. Fun, but a bit overwhelming. It's an old house with high ceilings. Painted woodwork. Wood floors (that need refinishing.) Quite a bit of light in most of the rooms. The kitchen is a bit darker though, having a window on the north side and being in the middle of the run of the rooms. We'll be opening the kitchen some, so it needs to work with the whole scheme. Whatever that is. Maybe I should build off of Olivia instead?...See MoreSerious doubts about my backsplash choice..
Comments (19)Hi everybody!! As usual, all of you Gardenweb folks have generously given of your time to help me out...THANK YOU!!! (and especially cawaps, who posted the mock-up, which helped tremendously to get a very good picture of what it is going to look like.. That "kompy" kitchen is so much like the one I have, its scary! That being said... I still like the slate and I think the thing that helped the most was hearing that the granite I pictured could well work and is not too busy. My house is actually very rustic and informal... its a contemporary design in the country that is very open airy floor plan (except for the kitchen) and currently has almost all off-white walls and darker wood trim. It has an almost "lodge" feel to it, so to answer blfenton, I guess we are indeed going with a rustic look. A modern, white kitchen would not work in this house. Even so... too much of a good thing is... too much, and I totally appreciate the concerns about all the stone and gray. To that end, I think I will indeed wait till everything but the backsplash is up to make the final call. I think the granite choice will stay about the same, and the variable will be the backsplash. beeps, I think my doubts started when a friend, who I trust with color, looked at everything and said it was "too heavy". The truth is, this is the look I have wanted.. every picture of a kitchen I have been drawn to is mission/shaker cherry cabinets with slate tile.. so thats what I was looking for. As long as the colors work, I think it will work in this house. Unfortunately I am extremely lacking in in judging what works... colors, clothes, etc, so second guessing is second nature..to doubt is normal ;) Thanks to you all so very much! I wish I could pay you back, and I am going to try to put my "two cents" in on this forum in the future whether I'm sure or not :)...See Morech-ch-changes (David Bowie is stuck in my head now)
Comments (1)I think you will really enjoy having hardwood in the kitchen. We have had wood floors in this house and the one prior and I have never had a problem in spite of our big dogs and a tile guy who spilled tons of water on it. We don't baby them. We do have 2 or 3 coats of polyurethane as a top coat. I wouldn't have anything else. I have white oak with a lighter custom stain which helps hide a multitude of sins. Sounds like your plans are coming along great!!! All the best with your new kitchen plans....See Moreshanghaimom
