Having Second Thoughts About Flooring
Comments (14)Thanks for all your responses! I'm really torn both ways. I'm tired of the upkeep of wood, along with having to be so many precautions to prevent scratching. I recall having to put cushions under all the sofas to ensure no gouges, along with making sure the felt tips were on all my chairs. Then there is the thing about asking that everyone remove their shoes, lest another scratch shows up. That said, their is an undeniable beauty of wood flooring. It's mostly just my DH and I (son finishing college) and a very small dog, so the daily wear and tear isn't much. We do have a lot of family get togethers though. Another issue for the hardwood is the hardness in the living room. In the house with the hardwood in the family, no one hardly ever sat on the floor (even with the padded area rug). The previous house to that and now this house which had/have carpet, I am often on the floor/carpet. I think if I were to go hardwood in the main areas, I would omit the living room for this reason alone. I LOVE getting down on the floor with the grandkids. Plus with the hardwood, I had to lay a protector under the rug, to protect the hardwood, still had problems though with fading. With tile though, I'm not sure I could use enough padding to make it as comfortable as I like (though I wouldn't have to worry about protecting the darn wood floors). The case against tile, is the cold factor. I saw where it costs about $10/sq foot for heated floors. Too pricey for me. I love some of the light color marble looking porcelain tiles. Bright, pretty and elegant. Tile goes so far away from what is mainstream in this area though scares me. Perhaps, I should get a box of tiles and spread them out and see it that way. I need new flooring so bad (crappy carpeting is pulling away at the seams even), so I shouldn't put this decision off too long....See MoreI'm having second thoughts about the kitchen/living room design
Comments (46)Marti- I vote for the half wall, messy kitchen or not! If you leave the solid wall, you still can't see the fireplace and you're walking over to the doorway, to talk to anyone in that room. Yes, you will be open to the dining area...but you already have a long, narrow space there (no peninsula, right?) so the half wall would open up the kitchen to the fireplace room, making that space feel wider and larger. What's opposite the open area, on the other side of the kitchen? That's all you'd see, as you walk in. Maybe you could change a few of the uppers, on that wall. All you have to do is get new doors, or even cut out areas, in the existing doors and add glass, chicken wire, fabric, a combination of both, etc. It might be nice and it would give you a little color or sparkle, in the kitchen area. Just a thought :)...See MoreHaving second thoughts about backsplash, need opinions!
Comments (27)Thanks everyone for your input! Pearl1976, I love your description of it being a 9/10 - that makes a lot of sense and puts it in perspective. Rantontoo, thanks for the feedback on the patterns - apparently I have a lot to learn about design techniques! Thanks Mayflowers again for your suggestions on what to change. I'll talk to the contractor tomorrow and figure it out. If it's too much to change out the tile at this time, at the very least we'll remove the tile on the left side, which wasn't supposed to be there anyway. The tile could always be changed at a later time if we don't do it now. I've showed the pictures to people and a lot of people seem to like it, even though it's not as light as I wanted. Thanks again everyone - everyone's input has been very helpful!...See MoreHaving second thoughts about DA roses in our climate
Comments (27)I am so glad someone brought this up. I, too, am new to growing roses this year (majority DA in my garden), and like sbrklyn, my potted, ownroot, and bareroot DA roses that get full sun started out impressively strong, loaded with gorgeous buds and blooms, but the incessant rain this summer in 6a has unleashed every plague possible on the roses. I have 1 Kordes Earth Angel that is doing markedly "better" in that most of its leaves are intact and it is still at prime foliage level--but I've seen evidence of black spot and what my county extension office determined to be some cane canker. I only use copper and sulphur as directed with diligent management (removing affected leaves and stems, maintaining good air circulation, disinfecting shears per cut, pruning crossing canes, not pruning during wet periods, etc.), but it's often been too wet to apply anything. I'm not ready to give up and dig them out yet, but it's driving me insane. Here is the progress report, from worst to best performing in the garden atm: -Alnwick, ownroot: was covered head to toe in cane canker and had to be completely pruned (canker, botrytis, black spot, powdery mildew) -Evelyn, bareroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Carding Mill, ownroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Golden Celebration, ownroot (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Lady of Shallot, potted (botrytis, canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Boscobel, potted (canker, black spot, powdery mildew) -Claire Austin, potted (canker, black spot) -Earth Angel, Kordes: (botrytis, minimal black spot and powdery mildew) -Princess Alexandra of Kent, ownroot (my most disease-resistant Austin atm, I may have pruned slightly for black spot, but no evidence of anything else!) Best wishes in your new home and garden!...See Morejim_w_ny
