Too early to uncover fig tree?
Comments (16)If you uncover (or take out) the tree while it is still dormant, it is protected from cold snaps and will come out of dormancy "naturally" at its own pace. If you wait until it is out of dormancy, you have to protect it from freezing temperatures. For years, I kept my figs in the garage until they broke dormancy, and then pulled them out in the morning, and in at night. I felt that I was "giving them a head start". After a few years, I realized that I wasn't getting figs any faster (the cool night temperatures in the garage saw to that) and just put them outside when the weather seemed likely to stay above 20 degrees. Being in New England, I did watch for any really big temperature fluctuations, and was prepared to protect them. If they are dormant, figs only need to be protected from extreme cold - not freezing temperatures....See Moreuncover fig tree in central NJ
Comments (5)Hey Marcy... I'm way down here in north Mississippi ( zone 7b) and I have uncovered my in ground carefully cloaked Celest and Texas everbearing trees. It's been so warm that they were beginning to leaf within the protective covering. It's been about two weeks now and they are bursting with green and literally covered in small figs. I'm watching the 10 day forecast carefully with no frost in sight but in 2007 we had an Easter freeze after a mild winter which killed the buds on almost all the early flowering fruit trees. All I can say is that mother nature is nothing short of unpredictable and ALWAYS wins. Let's hope she goes easy on these trees this year. Good luck....See MoreFrost Tonight Zone 5,6,7,inland,protect your fig trees!
Comments (6)Hi Leon:I am not using the boat ,anymore because,I can't launch it,to water, after I had Back Surgery,in 2006. But I used it before and had good fun, going fishing on Delaware river tributaries. As for the pruning,I really used the tree to get some extra Money. I sold all those cuttings,on Ebay, and,I am sure whoever grows it will be very Happy with the results. I know I am. Best Regards...See MoreDo You Cover Your Fig Tree From Birds?
Comments (8)I will cover if I ever get fruit. I started mine from cuttings and they have not done anything. I have had figs in the past but the gophers killed them. When I did get fruit, I had more problems with rats and squirrels than I did with birds. I plan on using knee highs to cover my fruit. It worked on the mango (until my dog ate it). I'm hoping I can get something to myself this year if I continue to leave the black raspberries uncovered for the birds....See MoreVladimir (Zone 5b Massachusetts)
