Paint Home Decorating Design Dilemma

More green, less gray

Painting kitchen island and TV cabinet in same great room SW 6201 Thunderous. First pic shows it does look green next to the tinted gray (looks light blue in pic!) primer. Other option I was given is SW 6207 Retreat which we both deemed too light. Designer on maternity leave so reaching out here.

Thunderous reading gray with green undertone in my room. Floor is tan tile. Walls are BM Bleeker Beige so more warm tones. I really wanted green with gray undertone. Countertops are Hanstone Montauk quartz.

Room has east and south windows, picture taken in natural daylight. We do get some shade on the south windows.

I like the "depth" of color and wondering if anyone can give me suggestions. I need another quart of paint anyway, so I'm still at a point where I can easily tweak this.

We need to see how the green relates to your wall color and your flooring. If everything else is warm toned, not sure why you want to go with a green that has "grey undertones"?

Another great one in that category is "Sage Green Light" SW2851 - goes great on cabinets and would fit well with your beiges, countertop choice, and still works well with grays! Good luck to you! -Nicole

Mike, I think the photos you have shared of your garden over the years show an incredible mastery of using plants well. I know what you mean about cooler temps and more shade making it difficult to use these sorts of plants up there, and the scale of your own garden allows you to use low growing shrubs/ground covers to the same effect. Maintenance concerns are always an issue in garden design, and I find myself prioritizing maintenance as the number one determinant for planting design anymore. I'll still use fast growing stuff if it is easily moved/divided, and will hold the look for at least 3 to 4 years before it needs dividing. The Black Mondo Grass is always a cool plant in the garden, but I've found that it is tricky to get it to really show up well in garden settings. It is too easy for it to disappear into the shadows if it isn't planted with strongly contrasting foliage and lighter surroundings. I've found myself getting it wrong on occasion, thankfully it is really easy to move around... Here's a shot in a new garden planting where I know it will only get better over time, contrasted with the bright green of the Foxtail Asparagus Fern and the brick coping. Zucchini leaves less green as more grow

My zucchini had all sorts of different shaped leaves this year. Colors varied from solid dark green to green with white pattern. Some leaves were fan shaped, some had fingers. A couple of plants had different shaped leaves on the same plant. Those were plants grown from the same seed packet and planted right next to each other in full sunlight. One plant produced green and yellow striped zucchini, the rest of the plants had typical green zucchini.

Thanks all! I did go back to the store and have them mess with the color a bit. I think I'm going to like the new color better (I did a quick test splotch) but I don't think I'm going to have enough for a full second coat. I'm actually using this in 2 different rooms so I'll probably use what I have left in one room and figure something out for the other. Sorry it took me so long to respond -- gardenweb was giving me guff when I tried to log in.

I need a quick 101 on undertones to find a paint color that will work. One of the many problems with thinking about color in terms of undertones is the only thing you can do is subjectively "match" colors. The theory that you can color by undertones provides zero methodology for solving any kind of color conundrum past "matching" according to subjective undertones and/or not combining alleged undertones in unsavory combinations, like pink and yellow. So, while a lot of people talk a lot about undertones, no one discusses any sort of framework about how you're actually suppose to use them to solve complex color dilemmas like yours. Color Rule #1 is change the light and you change how the color looks. Color is light. Color and light are inextricably tied. Before you move on to choosing paint colors, you first need to assess the lighting situation. Neodymium (like Reveal), halogon and LED could all contribute to exaggerating the greeness of the sofa. Incandescents could help the sofa look more "yellowy beige". I would try changing light bulbs first and then move on to what can be done with wall color to help shift the sofa color more towards yellow and away from green.

Kitchen surfaces currently covered for painting but here is a picture taken right after the countertop install. @Sammie J I have a medium green wall in the foyer, and light sage green touches in the living room on the other side of the fireplace. So nothing too close in proximity but still needs to flow.

Thank you Nicole @DF Hughes design | build, my paint deck has SW Sage Green Light and that is a possible option. Maybe I'm looking for a browner undertone?? I love how some people can just see what would work in a space. It's a lot more work for me, which is why I hired a designer to help put together finishes to update the space.

Plan to pick out backsplash tile after the paint is complete. Will keep perimeter cabinets in wood ton. I also plan to paint/seal the gray grout in the floor tile if it doesn't kill me. Getting too old to spend hours on the floor. There is SO much tile through the great room, hall, closets, mudroom.... but I did finally find the color which works which is under the stove where I tested it.

What do you think about SW 6208 Pewter Green? On same strip as SW 6207 Retreat which was option given to me, but is darker??
