Tiny kitchen dilemma: Corner cooktop or cooktop next to fridge? Help!

Tanya Schoettler

We're remodeling our 1960s kitchen and have run into a design dilemma in that we're unsure where to put the cooktop. We have narrowed it down to two options, either next to the fridge (which feels a little cramped) or putting it into the corner (which may seem a bit unbalanced. The cooktop next to the fridge would require either 18 or 21 inch base cabinets on the wall with the window to allow for the cooktop to fit. Has anyone had 18inch base cabinets? Is that totally impractical or has it been fine? Thanks for the help! It feels like we've been going in circles trying to find the "best" design, though they all have compromises. The photos include 18 inch base cabinets with cooktop next to the fridge, or standard 24 inch counters with corner cooktop.
