Comments (14)The hyex is the blower? I think it's possible the silencer may not be so necessary ... I also think people who know about this may tell you that it is! Here's my experience. I just bought a 42" x 27" undercabinet hood with no blower and routed the 10" pipe up to the attic. It bent there at about, um, 80-degrees and the HVAC guy put the silencer in at that point and then added the fan. It was loud. So instead he added some more duct parallel with the ceiling which pulled the silencer further from the hood itself, if you follow. It got quiet. My HVAC guy, who is admittedly a nut, seemed to be of the opinion that the biggest reason for the improvement was simply the increased distance from the hood. I also talked him into making that extra duct run parallel to the ceiling - i.e. at a shallower angle than right-angling it straight away after it hit the attic; that may also have helped (he was a little reluctant because it was extra work but he's a really good guy and wanted very much to do a good job so when I turned around he'd done as I suggested: yeah!). So anyway, that's what this guy said - he's of the opinion that the silencer was "a waste of money" and the proximity-parameter was of biggest importance. I talked extensively with this amazingly nice guy at Tradewind and I'm pretty sure he would not agree; he'd credit the silencer more. If you have time and patience, I'd say you could try it without and if it's a problem, then get the silencer and pop it in. Just so you know, that silencer is *massive* - it's more like a jet engine than the blower itself. Good luck! BTW, I hope you don't have fussy neighbors too close. I opted not to use an outside blower because I was concerned with the noise it would impose on nearby neighbors; others have noted this problem with that blower I think. If you're miles from the next elk, it may not matter. If you have cranky neighbors 20 feet away, well...it seemed a problem worth preempting....See Morehelp with cooktop and range hood widths
Comments (6)as weissman said, you actually NEED the 3 extra inches on the sides of the hood. The problem with not having the hood there is not a matter of the grease and other items collecting on the hood itself or the cabinets around it, rather the hood needs to be able to collect the "steam"(for lack of a better term) that is rising from the cooktop itself. In the horrible diagrams that will follow to show my point, steam does not rise straight up, as I'm sure you know, it expands outward as it rises. if you are doing stainless as the backsplash, it will be easier to keep clean as one piece than would tile with grout(although looks dictate this step. As far as the depth, the hood also NEEDS to come to the middle of the front burner...again for collection reasons! Here are the diagrams to show what I'm talking about...for my diagram, each _ will be equal to 6"; while the / represents rising "steam". : ______ :: _______ \______/ : \______/ 36" top w/ 36 hood 36" top w/ 42" hood While it is obviously not to scale, you can see that the hood will collect more exhaust if it is oversised. Your designer should have already known this, and explained that rather than just telling you 'it needs gaps'. which is actually wrong. the way that cooking "splatter" actually comes to settle on cabinets and things is that as it rises it is heated and in vapor form. then as it cools, it reforms as a solid and settles with the help of gravity. So, if you have a hood with gaps, its going to stay dirty on top from this scientific principle alone. Not to mention the goofy look of a gap. I hope this helps in some way! By the way, do you know what the two tone look on cabinets is called? By two tone, I mean when the lowers are stained and the uppers are painted/glazed? Comments (10)We got a 36 inch Bosch and a 36 inch Zephyr Venezia hood. It is a deep one, however (24 "). I wasn't willing to give up any more room on the sides, but I figure we could train ourselves not to bang our heads. I tend toward using the middle "burner" the most and the capture is excellent. I rarely use more than 3 at a time, I just like room to spread out. Usually, there's only one thing cooking vigorously at a time, so it's working really well for us. Comments (32)Option 3. It gives you a very functional and esthetically beautiful kitchen. I would spend the money and scrimp and save elsewhere in a heartbeat if I had to. For example, if I had X amount of money saved up in the budget towards new appliances or a fancy backsplash tile, I would rather wait on one or several of those things verses settling for a crappy layout. Those things can be added later as you save up more $, but the layout is a done deal. There are quite a few things that I would find really dysfunctional and/or just plain annoying working in the first two layouts.
