Pioneer Roses from Antique Rose Emporium
Comments (44)Vap, you will love Thomas Affleck! I just found some photos from 2012 - not my best ones, but will go thru my camera later and post as I find some. I have gotten lazy now - its a 3 hour drive, and if I want some ARE roses, I will wait til they have free shipping, but like last nite - I wanted to get a few before their prices changed Feb. 1 so I ordered Sweet Pea, Beverly, F.J. Lindheimer and Nacogcoches [I live 30 minutes from there - and remember seeing this rose and a huge pink growing under that big shed at this old run down motel. I would stop alot and try to identify these roses. I think the big pink was Queen Elizabeth. The yellow, which turned into Nacogdoches, I couldnt figure out unless it was Sunbright, a rose that stays dark yellow]....See MoreFree Shipping - Antique Rose Emporium
Comments (30)Alameda - Gypsy Sue bloom size is about 3-4 inches. The flower is very full, like the English roses. Although it is advertised as apricot, I would consider it to be a white rose since the slightest bit of sun easily fades the color. It is also a very narrow rose, but very tall at 6ft. In Texas, I would guess that it would climb. Another characteristic about Gypsy Sue is that the flower is easily damaged, by rain, by wind, by sun, by insects, it's very delicate. Nevertheless I still like it, the spring flush last year was terrific. I took some very unflattering photos and hesitate to show it. These were taken after digging it up and moving it to a different location while it was in bloom. I don't grow Brazos Belle but it looks very nice on their website. Comments (14)This is my 1st time ordering from Antique Rose Emporium. I heard from a friend in Texas that ARE's gallon size is huge, and she's right. The weight of ARE's one plant is equivalent to 4 plants from Roses Unlimited !! The weight of the root ball is worth the shipping cost of $14 per one rose. The stem of Prairieville Prince is much bigger than a pencil, indicating a woody & chunky root which has a better chance of winter-survival in my zone 5a. I also like ARE's excellent instructions of NO FERTILIZING for the first month, plus winter-protection is needed if the temp. is below 28 F. I lost a few established roses this past mid-April when the temp dipped to 20 F, and these roses have 3 gallon root-ball and big stems. Below is Prairieville Prince gallon size for $23, with a bud, received from ARE this May 12. The green jug contains 4.5 lb. of fertilizer, and the weight of ARE's gallon is many times heavier than the green jug. Note the thickness of the stem which is vital for my zone 5a winter survival....See MoreGypsy Sue from Antique Rose Emporium
Comments (35)I have had exactly two blooms on mine so far but it has been so hot this season any rose that produces a flower at all seems remarkable. She is pretty new, in full hot sun. I have put her in her next to Star of the Republic which is a favorite of mine but also not blooming at the moment. Gypsy Sue's first flower, produced when it was still cool, was graceful and peachy, a bit smaller than SotR, slightly pinker. The second flower produced recently, was pure white, also graceful, and lasted about 2 100 degree days before a clean petal drop. So far I don't love or hate it, but I do feel is is not doing badly for its conditions and hope it sticks around. If a pastel rose is going to turn white in heat (which mostly they do) I prefer a pure white to a dirty cream and I like a clean petal drop. Otherwise in wait and see mode....See MoreLilyfinch z9a Murrieta Ca
