July 2021 in my hosta garden
Comments (61)Debra, you’re right that Munchkin Fire and Mango Salsa have similar flowers. I am sorry that your Waverunner has had a rough start. I decided to order it last weekend after reviewing Steve’s photos and praise of it. Also, WR is a sport of Squash Casserole, one of Tony Avent’s creations and reported to grow well in the South. Wish me luck!...See MoreHosta C 2021 ..................
Comments (74)Peren.all, thanks for the nice words. I see what you mean about the mice looking happy together. (I never thought of it like that!) I may just keep them together! I am going to think about what I can put with them to make a grouping of 3. I'd certainly buy Cherry Berry at my horticultural society's sale if it were available----and then I'd ask you for some "tips!"...See MoreHosta F 2021 ......................
Comments (71)The last pic in the Hosta Library shows the effects of sun/shade on First Frost. The full shade one does look green on the edges. I wonder if Autumn Frost reacts the same way. I've never seen Ben Vernooij do this. It just seems to get lighter for me. Although, pics in the Hosta Library do show it with greenish edges. Its hard to know when those pics were taken. I've always assumed it was just color variation early in the season. Perhaps that is the difference. Now I need some more Hosta so I can experiment....See MoreHosta N 2021 ...........
Comments (29)Neptune was one of my first purchases back in 2016. I wonder if there are two different variants out there or if it is just a maturity/climate thing with the narrowest leaves being somewhat of an optical illusion with the leaf being more folded so it appears more narrow. I like the soft green color it emerges with before the leaf turns blue. Always thought mine had a broader leaf, but this pic before it turns completely blue looks more narrow although I know the leaves are broader than they look here. I do like and bought it especially for the blue look, but we've seen enough great pics of that already. I took a ton of pics trying to capture Navajo flowers this year, but its a great looking Hosta even without the flowers. I grow this in full sun but it doesn't seem to care. I ordered a Geronimo this year as I think there may be something to Van Wade's Indian series. (Geronimo is a cross between montana Aureo and Sea Drift, how can I go wrong?). and with flowers. I love the bright yellow Night Shift maintains in this shady location although it was even brighter yellow (without going white/parchment) when I bought it in 2018 grown in a greenhouse with shade cloth. I think Van Wade used 50%, but I'm not sure. Anybody out there know what he used? I love the uprightness of nigrescens. Not the best pic, but here's Norwalk Chartreuse....See Moreundertheoaksgardener7b
