Comments (22)Wangshan: It ain't easy, is it? Ya think they would have realized way back when that we would have things to look at other than the fire at night, huh? Our solution is kind of funky but works since my hubby has to get a rarely used, but necessary, Powerpoint projector for his business: We have the TV in an amoire in the back corner, where you can only see it from one chair in the room for that daytime/one person watching mode. Then we set up wires to a box above our ceiling light (which I built from am cannibalized ebay light and rewired) to project the TV to above the fireplace when we want to watch a movie as a "family event" at night. In our case, we don't have a gorgeous mirror. And I just have a propped picture that is lightweight to lift up and down when in use. During the summer the furniture is rotated more toward the corner TV and away from the fireplae, and in the winter we rotate everything about 40 degrees to open around the fireplace. (These are the current summer set up.) If I had your situation, and the area on the floor above accessable, I would be thinking about a neatly trimmed out ceiling access, where the TV gets raised and lowered from above, or a the projector screen with the same set up. It may sound too ambitious, but if you think of the satisfaction it would bring, it may be worth it....See MoreNeed advice to makeover my living room
Comments (14)Just some thoughts.......... I would definitely get rid of the behemoth entertainment center and get something smaller. The one you have now actually blocks part of the nice windows. You have a newer TV and don't need a big ET for it. I would just paint the end tables and coffee table maybe a matte black. They look sturdy and clean lined. When painted they would have a bit of an Asian influence and look more contemporary. Its cheaper to paint than to buy new ones. I would cover the planter and make it a ledge. I would install tiny pendant lights replacing the cam light overhead. This will help define the foyer area. Tiling the foyer area would help define it and be more functional since that area is where dirt and slush from outside land. I would paint out the backs of the book shelves. Also remove the doors on the bottom and put in some large baskets to hold your stuff. This would break up the big 'wall-o-wood' look that it has now. Use a warm color for the walls so that the wood wall blends in better. Since the paneling goes all the way to the ceiling, use a warmer white on the crown molding. Stark white is too harsh when lined up with the wood. Don't change the brick or the mantel. They go with the house. The fireplace looks very nice. Painting the screen to bring down the shininess would be better though. If you do not open and close the shutter doors and use them, I would remove them. Do you use the ceiling fan on the living room ceiling a lot? If so, you need to keep it of course but otherwise it could go. The idea to put a bar in place of the desk.......Do you NEED a bar near the foyer to offer guests a drink when they come in? If so, then it would work for your needs but I think a narrow cabinet or table would be the better choice. Consider adding a rug to anchor the furniture. Nice heavy drapes would make the room look cozy and balance things out. I would stick to solid color instead of a busy print for such a small room or use a print that is tone on tone....See Morefireplace makeover!
Comments (3)I love your flooring. The fireplace itself, not so much. I would have removed the brick on the left, so that you were left with just the fireplace and hearth itself. I am guessing too late for that, since you now have new flooring. Pick a color from your flooring, and give it a paint wash, rather than a solid paint job. Solid, has a plastic look to me. A wash in an eggshell or flat finish, will make it look like a real brick fireplace. I also agree on the brass. Arcy's description of a circus tent top, is exactly what came to mind when I looked at it. I would replace that....See MoreHow should we makeover this fireplace?
Comments (4)A couple of relatively new products that allow "painting" of brick with mineral-based color would allow you to fix both the voids along the edge, change or adjust the color, and redefine damaged bricks as having character. PermaTint has both a semi-transparent and a solid mineral stain that can be tinted to multiple colors. Click on PRODUCTS, then See Full Color Chart. Another company, Romabio, has a solid and a textured solid mineral stain as well as a limewash. There are 15 ready-mixed colors, but according to the site, local stores selling this paint can provide a multitude of colors. Contact the companies with questions not answered on their sites. Using either brand would allow you to fill in the mortar voids, then color them when you color the brick. This solves the problem of differences in new and old mortar color. One other product, DyeBrick, has mineral stain products for both mortar and bricks. It's based in Britain, but can be shipped to Canada and the U.S. usually in 8-12 days....See MoreDawn Gruszewski
