SW Harmony vs BM Aura vs Mythic paint...
Comments (16)funcolors...The guy who started Mythic actually came out with a paint called American Pride first (also made by ACE). It was sold specifically as a zero-VOC, low cost paint. The product really didn't catch on and they never really took market share away from AFM or the big paint companies. So, he got millions of investment dollars, hired a really good marketing company and launched Mythic. In their own words, they have admitted that American Pride and Mythic are the exact same product. Funny thing is, Mythic is about $15 per gallon more. Also, its now being called "non-toxic". It wasn't "non-toxic" when it was $15 per gallon cheaper and a different name. Paintguy1... yes, great marketing. That's what a $20M investment will do. Regarding third-party testing...that's all good, but it really depends on what you are testing for. There is no testing protocol for non-regulated VOCs, SVOC's and other hazardous air pollutants that are also toxic to humans. Until this is available, I take advice from my most chemically sensitive customers. They tell me that AFM Safecoat is the only product they can use. I believe them. Comments (12)Sheen has a huge impact on color. This is why we so often recommend that someone choose one white and paint the walls and trim 2 different sheens. It will appear lighter on the trim and cabinets than the flatter wall sheen. The other thing that impacts the look of a color is the texture it is painted on. I often recommend using heavy weight watercolor paper to create samples because it more closely resembles the texture of a wall than a smooth piece of paper or foam core or the Samplize samples. I have also often used an old piece of primed drywall to test my colors, especially taupes and whites . Both are sensitive to texture variations. Spraying paint and rolling paint also changes the color, sprayed paint dries faster and that generally makes the paint lighter. I always buy a quart of the exact paint in the sheen that I am going to buy in gallon size and paint a portion of a wall in the color before buying gallons. I know this doesn't help after the fact. Out of curiosity I would go to Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore and ask them to do a scan of each of the two samplize samples and pull the gallon formula to compare to the actual formula on the gallons you purchased. Is it the same as the formula that you have on the gallons of paint that you purchased? You will know then that it is or is not a color match issue, but a sheen or texture issue. I cannot see the what the color is on the SW sample, but I can see that the second sample is Edgecomb Gray. This color is a taupe and does have some pink undertones. On a textured surface when the light is catching the texture and causing the highlights and shadows those undertones can be more pronounced. Just an FYI - I don't recommend flat paint for walls - it simply isn't as durable as something with a slight sheen like an eggshell finish. Do you plan on re-painting? If so, we may be able to help you find a similar color that will hit the mark....See MoreHow true to color are Samplize paint samples?
Comments (10)I just got a bunch. The texture is perfect, the true color is perfect. The only major disadvantages compared to the can are: they are behind on shipping at the moment so it takes like 7-10 days; and it's only one square of 12 inches. I have taped mine up and I'm moving it around. But usually I like to paint a big swatch in several places. However I think the color is WAY more accurate, and less messy. I previously got a sample can of Rainwashed and painted it on poster board (years ago, and couldn't find it recently) and the color is very different from the even, saturated samplize square. The cans use a white base and they're small, so if you need a light color, you are talking recipes calling for like a fraction of a drop of something, and if it's dark, the white base won't be what the eventual color will use which is usually a deep base. I mean it might be close enough....See MorePly-Gem vs Jeld-Wen vs Milgard vs Andersen vs ?? windows
Comments (5)About a year ago we had all our windows and a patio slider door replaced with Renewal by Anderson's new Fibrex windows. The Fibrex is a composite of wood fiber blended with a polymer: it wont flake, rust, blister, peel, crack or corrode, is 2x stronger than vinyl and resists warping. I live in NJ so we chose the Low-E4 SmartSun glass: their most energy efficient glass option for cool and hot climates and blocks 95% of UV rays that can damage drapes and furniture. They are easy to clean, and look good; there are all sorts of styles to choose from. They had a very experienced team install them in only 2 days. I researched all sorts of brands of windows and chose Anderson. The warranty is super and is fully transferable should you sell your home. Best of luck in your window journey!...See MoreLori A.
