What style is the kitchen? It would help us if you posted pictures of the materials you're using or an inspiration photo, but I agree with Lyn's comments. I like lantern pendants in foyers and staircases, but those are spaces you're just passing through. Clear glass shades aren't shades at all.

@kandrewspa We have shades of blue sprinkled in every room and our style is what I would call "California coastal casual". I do want them to give off enough light since we don't have any windows directly in the island area.

We have ceramic pendants bc I too wanted light to shine out from the body of the light and not be solely directed down at the counter -

I love British lighting company Original BTC - they have lots of options and bc many of their styles are uber-simple I feel like they are bit less trendy

I have pendants with clear glass and never again would I do it. They look dirty all the time just from dust settling inside and out. I get lots of light in my kitchen and it just highlights the mess. Big mistake for me. They look great when just cleaned but not after that. Just my experience.

@la_la Girl so excited to see a good picture of OTC pendants! I've been considering a couple of their fixtures for our remodel. I've been concerned about how much light comes through the shade, and can't find any user reviews. But those look fantastic. Definitely back on my short list.

@Elizabeth Kelly maybe your first link. It would help to see a picture of your room, or even of your cabinet and countertop selection. Definitely not the second link though. That's more "Mad Max" than it is "coastal casual."

Our room, actually our entire downstairs is a construction zone! Plumbing, electric, and HVAC are happening now, so we don't even have drywall (this was an addition/renovation). Cabinets arrive 3/23, so we may not even be ready in time for them since they were so much faster than what Kraftmaid quoted, but we are excited that they'll be here sooner than later. Countertops haven't been chosen, but want white quartz with some veining but nothing busy. Backsplash is polished white, off whitish, and grayish subway tile in a classic brick lay. Floors are wirebrushed French Oak. We have shades of blue throughout our house and will continue to do so. :)

Elizabeth, it's nearly impossible for us to help you pick one when we have no idea what the home looks like, the kitchen, the layout, the style, the colors, etc.

we don't even know the size of the island, how many pendants you need, how it's situated, if there is an overhang, the flooring, stools, etc. All of this plays into style and choice.

12" to 18" diameter is a huge difference in size.

why in such a rush to get these? wait until the cabs/countertops are installed, have everything wired, and then choose. There really is no hurry to pick the pendants before everything else is in. Ditto the backsplash. Just wait.

I took some time to choosemine after looking at no less than 800 choices. another commenter on here recommended these to me and I like them. they're about 12". since my island isn't that wide, I couldn't go much larger.

Since you have given us nothing to go on, we can't help, other than to say which ones we like.

At the very least, post a picture of the space (do you have before shot? in progress shot?) Kitchen diagram, and the style you plan on having.

I would not do a fabric shade in the kitchen.

Using different finishes for cabinet's hardware, and for island lighting can be a plus - maybe island's is brass or soft gold ... do you like area around kitchen to be "dressy," or very casual? Of course, none of us have seen!

Ill show you mine, We have them on dimmers with a large round bulbs. You do have to clean them more, the glass shows everything. I think they are 16” , we have 12’ ceilings and a huge island so they work proportionately .

Clear glass glare is not a plus in a workroom. Ambient lighting has to be condidered before task lighting. Pendants are task lighting and accent lighting all at once. It all has to be a part of an overall *lighting plan*. Not just a couple of pools of light where they add nothing to your lighting and don’t aid work at all.

No pendants at all if you are going to have a chandelier within eye view. Correctly placed recessed lights (on dimmer) will give you better light ob island and you will have the opportunity to hang a gorgeous chandelier with no competition.

@User we have recessed lighting that will be on a separate dimmer from pendants, but throughout the kitchen. We that help or hurt the glare factor of clear glass pendants? Natural light will be coming from adjoining eating area and adjoining living room, but not directly in kitchen work area.

For those with questions about layout, here was our initial floor plan design and first draft of the cabinet layout- both have changed with some of the specifics, but the gist of it is all the same. There is a large window over by the kitchen table and three large windows in the living room that you would be looking toward when you are standing at the island.

I have my pendants on a seperate switch on a dimmer. my recessed lights are on another. I seldom even turn on the pendants while cooking.

90"- we are doing two and yes, they are on a separate switch than the can lights and have a dimmer!
