Crawfish as a pond dweller?
Comments (27)Catching wild crawfish might tell you something about them. In various parts of Kentucky, Arizona, Colorado and Florida, I've caught many crawfish using a cloth bag and a piece of dead fish, or even raw chicken. They will cling to the cloth bag trying to eat the food inside so singlemindedly, that you could just tie a string to it, throw it in, wait 10 minutes then slowly pull it out. Depending on the season, it may be completely covered and you could get an instant meal. I've kept a pond with my dad in Tucson Arizona for many years with gold fish, 1 coy and some very small black fish I don't know the name of. I attempted to introduce crawfish several times and once they get to a certain size they try to run away and in arizona, that never ends well for them. I've found that if you have a shallow pond with liner, don't bother trying to keep crayfish unless you want to feed the birds. If you can keep a pond by digging into solid dirt or clay and just fill it with a hose with no liner, crawfish do well. The ponds in my families land in kentucky has a huge number of crawfish, and they are totally untended, but about 15 feet deep in the center and about 50 feet in diameter. They like to burrow into hard clay and if they don't find that they generally don't flourish. If you are able to get them to flourish, they will always run away when their population reaches a certain amount of fully grown members. If you want something to keep the fish population down, buy a small snapping turtle, but expect all you fish to have injuries....See Morecrawfish?
Comments (1)If he's not moving when he should be startled, I'd be worried, but if not, he's likely just waiting for a meal. Most of the lobster-things I've seen don't move around much. I'd give him the log back; they like to hide. It's not a good idea to keep them with fish since they can easily sneak up on sleeping fish and eat them. It doesn't always happen, but it can. I would think that keeping him well-fed would reduce the risk. When you say that your water is fine for him, do you mean just pH, hardness, and temperature, or is your tank also cycled? If it's not cycled, it could be stressing him....See Morecrawfish
Comments (14)The recipe at the link is the way it's done in Louisiana. I grew up on those yummy things; they are best in the spring. If someone would force me to choose between lobster and crawfish, I'd unhesitatingly choose crawfish. The point is, get your very well seasoned water boiling, and boil for a while before adding the crawfish so the flavorings can blend. You don't want to overcook the crawfish, 5 or 10 minutes is fine. Now, peeling them is an art. Here are directions for a right handed person: grab the crawfish tail in your right hand with the crawfish facing to the left. Grab the body with your left hand and twist in opposite directions, and the tail will come off. Still holding the tail with your right hand, peel off the first two or three sections of the tail shell. You now have exposed a bit of the tail meat. Grab that tail meat with the index finger and thumb of your left hand, and gently pull while pinching the other end of the tail meat through the shell, near the flippers. If you're lucky, the meat will come out in one piece. Devein it (that's a euphemism, it's intestine that runs along the top) if necessary (an empty 'vein' is edible), and pop it into your mouth. Hardcore crawfish eaters will, of course, suck the heads. There's a tiny bit of fat and liver inside the head which has soaked up a lot of seasonings. (In case it isn't clear, you suck on the part that you just separated the tail from, not the side of the head that has eyes and antennas.) Using a lobster analogy, you're getting the tomalley out of the critter. Hence the phrase seen on bumper stickers and T-shirts: "Suck da heads and squeeze da tips." Comments (3)You need 3/4 of the recipe.... the butter called for in the original recipe is 14 tablespoons.....so you need 10 1/2 tablespoons of butter. I am sure that the "butter police" won't cite you....so I would just use a stick of butter to sautee the veggies in and add 1 T at the end to finish...I don't think you will miss the half a Tablespoon of butter at all.
