Fireplace Help! Is our fireplace too small?
Hello - looking for some advice or feedback for our fireplace...we purchased a 42 inch linear insert for our fireplace bump out (bump out is 6.6 ft wide) and we are concerned that the insert is too small now that we see it framed in. Our original plan was to stone the fireplace all the way around, but now we are considering also doing some type of black surround (marble?) around the fireplace insert to make it look a little bit bigger. Curious to get other's thoughts on this? Does this look out of proportion? Would a 6 inch marble surround around the insert and followed by stone look better? Or are we just completely overthinking this?

2 years agoYou absolutely want the insert wider than the tv. We didn’t do this and regret it constantly. It was our error trying to save money. Would look way better if insert was wider

Comments (53)Pipdog - Sorry, I missed your earlier post. That house was the inspiration for one of my neighbor's remodels! Interestingly, they painted everything white BUT the fireplace and put in similar light wood flooring. Their fireplace is on an outer wall, not in the center, so it doesn't really stick out. Palimpsest - LOL on the mullet. I admit, I did have a mullet haircut 5(?) years ago when they were back in style, and DH had the faux-hawk. But hair is temporary by its nature, and I like looking silly. :) I didn't mean to be dismissive of "whatever this is" but I honestly don't know what to call it. I'm a big fan of modernism, and I'm clueless when it comes to transitional decor. I understand modern design principles, but ask me which chair goes with which table in a transitional home and I'm at a loss. And I'm really not a preservationist. We are making significant changes. The siding is definitely not original (I'd argue better than the stucco). We're updating the kitchen and baths, removing walls, etc. And our furniture is definitely not period correct. The house I posted above with the metal sheets is from a Dwell home tour and dubbed the "Hyper Eichler" by the architect. He approached the update by considering what the architects / builder might have done if the materials and building technology of today was available back then. I think it stays true even with the numerous changes from the original finishes, and I try to keep this approach in mind. Marcolo - I don't know that wanting to paint a fireplace or making any non-standard MCM chalterations is necessarily due to a lack of appreciation or trend following. Most of my neighbors truly believe they appreciate the MCM nature of their homes and probably wouldn't know a current trend if it hit them in the face, but they make all kinds of changes that purists would cringe at: granite counters, shaker cabinets, atrium conversion, fireplace removal, wood flooring, etc etc etc. A lot of it is due to tweaking their homes for their lifestyle (fireplace in the way, needed sq footage from atrium), or something I often hear is the emphasis on natural materials (granite counters, wood floors) despite the fact they're replacing formica and VCT....See MoreFireplace doors too small
Comments (2)Who ordered the doors, and why did they have to be a custom size? Why wasn't the opening of the fireplace a "normal" size to begin with? If it were me, and the contractor wanted to adjust the opening, I would want the final product to look like no additional work was done. In other words, don't just put in two strips of stonework. 2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoI don't think its too small if no tv. (however, if your tv is larger than 42", and you're mounting the tv on the fireplace, then yes, you want to go larger. look at all these pics w/tv's)

let me show you some examples. These inserts and tiled heights are very similar/identical to yours.
here's how yours would look w/large tile
I don't really like this look, and I don't like the shorty mantle.I like this. it has a black stone/tile surround and a nice oak mantle. you could do a shiplap or plastered wall above that mantle.

Or, use a zellige tile and go all the way up. mantle optional, so is the hearth

I also like this one w/the board and batten above the oak mantle. you could use a gray quartz like this for the surround
you asked about a marble surround. it would look something like this.
Or this one, which is acutally very pretty and just about identical to your set up. I'm sure this is a 42" insert. there is a quartzite material around it, and the planks are walnut. (you can see the TV outlet. )
from the side so you can see how it's done. this one will have a mantle (see the supports in place?) I would totally do this. or the Zellige tile
Here's a large format black porcelain tile that looks like slate. To me, the tv is a tad too large, and the mantle is too short. But I love the overall look w/the cabinets and shelves.
this is a good example of the tv being larger than the box. how do you think it looks?
what are your plans for under the windows?you could do a bench or something like this:
here's another insert like yours (a bit wider) w/the Zellige tile and oak mantle. love this look tooLittle diff look. I'd rather have the tile around the box, but you could certainly do something like this under your windows and above the mantle.

2 years agoI worried about the same thing. We had a 6ft wide space and they recommended a 36” insert based on the size if the room. Our tv is 55” and I was afraid it would look top heavy. I’m happy with the end result. To increase the width if the insert we would have had to go with a linear style which wasn’t right for our house. I’m still trying to figure out what decor to put on the mantel (flowers? Candles? Plant?)

last yearEasily solved with a steel surround. These are available in a wide variety of finishes to compliment the stone you choose, or just black. I tried plain black in this application and it did not look good.
