What's your favorite thing about gardening?
Comments (19)I don't have Sum & Substance either.. It is on my list, for some reason I cannot find that sucker around here anywhere, very frustrating, that one and Big Daddy are the ones I have been trying to find. I love to water, that is when I just stand outside for a hour zoning, well here lately I have been also sticking my head under the water stream every 15 minutes or so, if my neighbors think I am weird that is all the better:) My thing here lately has been to take myself to Tangled Roots Nursery and pick out "ONE" hosta a week, they are 30% off right now, I have managed to pick up 'Stained Glass' 'Spilt Milk' and 'Olive Branch' for under 12 bucks a piece, I am going tommorrow, they have about 4 left I am wanting, I know logically (gaswise and others) I should just go and get the 4 I want, but I really like spending the hour or so picking out the perfect one. The workers have (finally) stopped hovering over me, they have me figured out and they just wave me over to where the hostas are, this one poor kid had sweat dripping down his face before he finally edged away mumbling something about helping the other customers and for me to just take my time, funny.... I didn't see any other customers there, lol!! Thats what they get for sitting in the air conditioning!!! I love just walking around looking and touching my plants, I think that is why I love hostas so much, I will get down and fuss with them, looking at the way the veins and colors are, touching the leaves on them. I am a big toucher when it comes to my plants and flowers. My mother swears that is why my houseplants look so good, that they enjoy being touched and fussed with, if I can't touch it (Cactus, Pineapple, screw pine, ugh! force of habit to touch, not wise!) I don't have it:) I hate weeding though, just not my cup of tea, I would rather chew glass. And the main reason is I am scared to death of snakes, I just know one is going to be hiding behind that blade of grass, sounds silly I know, but the thought of touching one or heaven forbid being bit by one just does me in. that is what I so totally love about my hostas under the pine tree, no weeds:)...See MoreSome of your favorite things in your garden
Comments (37)What a great post, the stories are all so touching & humanitarian. Anything I was going to say about my favourite things in my yard would just sound so trivial & shallow in comparison. But I will share anyways. I do not have a fantastic landscape view, wildlife is limited, I have a subdivision lot to work with. Some of my neighbours think I spend an unhealthy amount of time gardening & that makes me odd? But I have spent the last 7 years with my husband, my son & 4 dogs in 2 different yards & I realize that I'm very grateful & fortunate to have that. We do spend a lot of time in our yard as a family. And slowly each year we add to it; for our enjoyment. Last year my husband spent a number of weekends building me a shed & veggie garden. It turned out great, but it was a lot of work for him after putting in 60 hour work weeks. So I really appreciate his weekend sacrifices to make me happy. And we all enjoy the veggie patch, it's great for little ones to learn about food. Even my husband is getting into gardening. He now wants to watch Monty Don & other gardening shows with me instead of watching a banal sitcom. It has really become something we are bonding over. We are planning on doing some garden tours together this summer. That would not have happened a couple years ago. It is just so nice to share that enthusiasm with someone else. The more he gets into gardening the easier it is to convince him to spend money on plants and the landscaping. So that's a win-win for me! He has also surprised me a few times by picking up potted roses or garden items that he knows I would like. To others that would seem so unromantic, but a handy garden tool or flower is right up my alley. And it proves he is listening to me! As for actual favourite things in the yard there are a few. We have a glacier boulder in our front yard. That was the reason I got him to go to the open house in the first place. We lived in the area & my husband said he wished we had a big rock on our lawn when we would go for walks and see other landscaped yards. So when this house went on the market, I told him about it and said it has the biggest rock in the whole neighbourhood. We bought it at the open house & it all started because of a big rock. And it's fun for the kids to play on too! I also have a couple plants that were from family. They are not anything fancy, but one is a plantain lily that my grandfather grew, than my mom has a chunk of it & now I have a chunk of the one my mom has. So it's special to me....See MoreWhat's the Strangest Thing you ever found in your food?
Comments (54)Oh, those broccoli worms. Those I've seen are exactly the same color as the broccoli and hide so easily. I haven't cooked broccoli for years without giving it a salt water soak in the sink first....anything alive comes right out ;0) I really can't think of much interesting that I've found in food....an occasional live thing in something organically grown can't be that unusual. Many, many years ago though someone gave me a box of either aplets or cotlets, and when opened there were some moth type looking things inside. Alive. I'd liked them up to that point and never ever have eaten another. I did see on the news just this month that they are closing after about 100 years in business. Not moth related. Wishing them no ill, but I'm sure its been 30 years since I've had one of their products. Living near the coast, we eat a lot of seafood that we've either harvested ourselves, bought directly from a boat, or sometimes a seafood store. Very rarely the grocery store. I did buy some very expensive tiny oysters that were not much bigger than a 25 cent piece at a chain grocery, sold on ice - I was really looking forward to them. As they started to heat in the pan, they started to pop open and explode like little geysers. I know thats not typical oyster cooking behavior and threw the whole pan contents out. And have never again bought 'fresh' seafood from a chain style grocery ;0)...See MoreWhat are your favorite sour foods? (Sour, not acid)
Comments (18)Argh! Carol, it's word salad at that point. For the taste buds, sour=acidic and bitter=alkali, or so I've read, making the tongue into a pH meter, and, indeed, the words sour and acid have common origins. In flavor, however, brie tastes sour but isn’t usually thought of as being acidic tasting. Whereas, citrus has to be extardinarily sweet not to taste the acidity, but Floral's limes and my lemons have sour notes beyond the general perceivable acidiy. I can't define it better. I just meant that I was interested beyond specifically acidic foods like tomatoes (old style), citrus and vinegar. ...Even though technically the sour flavor may be caused by acids. I’ve also read that sweetness doesn't affect the quantity of acid, though it affects the perception of it. Like putting sugar (or carrots) in the tomato sauce to mellow out the acidity. Apparently it masks, but does not neutralize, whereas modern, sweeter tomatoes have sufficiently less acid that you have to check the pH for canning, and adjust....See MoreCA Kate z9
