Comments (42)Paul! You always sound sad when I come across your thoughts (the end of your blog, some of your thoughts here). You have given wonderful gifts to humanity that will extend well beyond your lifetime. Vocation and career/financial compensation do not always coincide (nor are they meant to), and vocations also have seasons; it's okay to rest. I am a 35-year-old who has recently become possessed by growing roses, specifically the old fragrant ones, especially cream colors. I will help carry the torch until the flames of popularity are fanned again. I have an inkling the young ones ("crystal children") just coming of age who love the old clothes and hairstyles will bring about a rose renaissance in their 40s, but that's just my guess. (I had NO IDEA the English and old garden roses I was in love with all over Pinterest for my wedding could actually be grown in my garden, for instance.) Take heart! All is not lost....See MoreIs RVR the only nursery that sells Paul Barden roses?
Comments (29)I appreciated the post and explanation. It seems it would be very difficult to run a business like that, and we must remember that only these smaller ones, generally, grow and sell the more unusual roses we so crave. They seem to be family operations, and trying to juggle all of it would be really hard. RVR I didn't count the number offered, but it seems huge. Imagine trying to guess how many to propagate of which each season and the enormous amount of work in the field and possibly greenhouse, let alone the sales end of it! No complaints about RVR, and it would take a serious annoyance before I'd make a fuss publicly. But I don't think it is wrong to discuss it as long as it is just stating the facts and not intended to turn other customers whose experiences may be different away. They had what I wanted. No one else did except one I found out later in my other post going here about RVR. I have 2 Hettie and 2 Awakening I got from bands, Barden roses. They don't do well in my zone without a lot of extra fussing in the winter. BUT they seem resistant to blackspot and almost everything except Jap beetles, shiny leaves, no spraying, maybe kelp. I so wanted Marianne and Jeri but will pass now....See MoreMy first Paul Barden Rose
Comments (11)Wow Sheila, your Paul's are stunning. I especially love Song of Stars, cool name. Jasmine, I'm sure it would be fine in a pot . Mine was in one for quite some time before I found a place in the garden for it. It is just a perfect red bloom. This is year two and its buds now are fully double but small it's so cute. It has no yellow leaves no wilty leaves it's just an ideal little rose and it's only going to be about 24". Because it's not going to be jai normous it's a good size to tuck into empty spot so I may get a couple more I really like this little rose....See MoreMore on Paul Barden's roses, please!
Comments (55)Aaron, congratulations on your DH! I am waitlisted. Ann, I’m not too far from you, in Portland, and just got a young Jeri Jennings from a local rose friend who received a spare with his order. JJ looks like she is going to be a wonderful Hybrid Musk for my arch. Her clusters of blooms are buttery golden-yellow with peach edges and what I’d call a sweet licorice fragrance. GORGEOUS! Joyce B looks like a fantastic rose, too. If only I could grow them all! I’d love to see pics if you get JB. Carol Jeri Jennings...See Morechris209 (LI, NY Z7a)
