Will a sectional sofa work in this open concept room? Please help.

just recently moved and will be purchasing new living room and dining room furniture. My main question is whether a sectional will work. My husband’s main issue is being able to see the tv (shocking!) and he loves the recliner (we have another recliner on backorder but we can cancel)

Please help. Thank you

You have placed the tv and the seating area right in front of 6 foot sliders, directly in front of a traffic pattern. Please redo your floor plan indicating all walls, windows, door openings. Include all adjacent areas, too, so that the PROs here can do their magic!

What is the other space with the 2 chirs ? IMO put the Tfacing each other perpendicular to the FP sofas or 2 V there with 2 recliners and do a sofa and 2 choirs in the room with the FP so maybe explain the floor plan a bit more I do not like TVs in the same space as the a fireplace if at all possible .BTW IMO a sectional is the most expensive way to get the least number of comfy seats. Arm rests = comfort so you have 2 people who are sort of comfy and the rest all line up like sitting in the center seat on a sofa so my answer is a nice sofa facing the FP and a nice chair on either side facing each other or 2 sofas facing each other both of those options get 4 people who are comfy all the time and 5-6 in a pinch.

My Flexsteel sectional has metal clips so the two pieces hook together. It's on a wood floor but it's against two walls so it's not going anywhere (it also weighs a ton). No recliners; we plan on a cat sometime soon and I once injured a cat by trapping it under the recliner when I closed it up, so I swore I would never own a recliner again. We did choose to use a larger coffee table because we needed the surface space, and the coffee table that had fit the regular couch just fine was too small for the sectional, both visually and functionally. Regarding measurements, our sectional sits in a corner against two walls. I simply measured the two walls and allowed a bit of space for small end tables, then hunted down a sectional that fit those measurements and wasn't too bulky for the room. Small-scale sectionals that aren't just two loveseats stuck together or a couch with a chaise stuck on (I find it very difficult to get out of the chaise) are not easy to find, but they're not ALL ginormous! Ours is something like 90" on one side of the "L" and 110" on the other. If you plan to "float" your sectional, get a roll of blue painter's tape and map out where your sectional's going to go, right on the floor with the tape, until the proportion looks right and then measure that; if you have the standard sofa-loveseat combo now you can shove them together into that space and get a rough idea of scale. The biggest "pros" in our house are that it wastes no space in our small living room - when we had a couch and loveseat, there was a substantial area in the corner that was wasted (furniture arms take up a lot of space) and we couldn't both stretch out to watch TV, read or nap while now we can and still have room for the dog. :-) The main con is that it IS a little bit heavy-looking for the small room, although cut-back arms, a relatively low back, and a slightly-bland midtone sage color do reduce the visual weight somewhat.

Two Sofas or Sectional for Open Family Room

Good morning all: Well, we went with two 100" Madison leather sofas in Brompton Cocoa from Casco Bay Furniture and they arrived last Thursday, several weeks before expected. We LOVE them! Our sofas were estimated to take about 16 weeks as the size was custom so frames had to be built from new pattern. In addition, Rob was kind enough to send us several hide samples from amongst the numerous they have at the warehouse so we could choose the color we liked. This too was supposed to add to the time and we were thinking a delivery time in May but last Thursday they arrived right on time. My family and I could not be happier. They look EXACTLY like RH Maxwell sofas. I understand that the ones from CB are superior in construction to the ones currently made in China by RH, but since we have only had them one week I can only tell you what they look and feel like. They are beautiful now and we are looking forward to seeing how they "weather" over time. My husband literally started on one end of one sofa, got up, moved down a little, all the way to the end of the second sofa to see if there was any sagging or lifting of cushions: there was none. When we went to the RH Outlet in Wrentham in December/January we sat on several 96"and 108" Lancaster and Maxwell sofas and found the sagging, and if one person sat on the end of one cushion with no one else in the middle, it would lift like a see-saw. The sofas on the floors of RH retail showrooms are most often over 5 years old from when they were constructed in the US: the ones at the Outlets are more consistent with quality of product if ordered today as they are typically customer returns. Open Layout living room. Sectional vs 2 couches vs something else?

A couch is generally 2 adults and one empty cushion. A sectional, is generally 3 adults and 3 empty cushions or 4 adults and 2 empty cushions, if you have cup holders in a middle with 2 recliners on either side of cupholders, and 2 recliners on the end. A love seat is not long enough to 'stretch out' on, but each cushion has potential for an endtable(cup holder) and 2 adults will generally sit on it. SOO, the best case scenario is actually a LoveSeat, 2 recliners, an upholstered rocking chair or glider (with ottoman if possible), a chaise upholstered chair, and one pretty wood straight back chair with armrests &either a tapered seat or a cushioned seat. Seating for 5 to 7 depending on floorspace.. --- With your current set up, I would say the LoveSeat and Chaise is fine!, so I would look to add dual recliners with cupholders, and a pretty upholstered chair with an open stock, petite footrest, if you can find one. The chair is at Birchlane and the recliners are in Canvas(many options for fabrics) by LaZBoy. You have a beautiful place to live!! Don't forget to provide the endtables, for lamps and/or possibly a floor lamp /table combination by your couch/chaise? I think your television placement depends on where it fights the window glare best, and that is likely what you are planning too. I hope you can find a pretty console to set it on, if not a floating console. That would be so pretty in your nice open living area. Just keep it low, not high, in other words. What does the 4th wall in your room look like? Is it possible to rearrange things? Give it a quarter turn so that it is no longer in front of the windows. In other words, one section on the back wall and the other section would be where the TV / console currently set. The TV could then be on that (unseen) 4th wall. I also think the TV is mounted too high.

If you want a sectional, it looks like you could have one with the longest section facing the fireplace and either have a short section with its back to the window or opposite that, facing the window. But for placing the recliner so hubby can see the tv, probably back to the window would be best. I would not get a chaise sectional, if you need seating instead of lounging. If you need lounging/tv watching space, then a chaise running along the window would give prime tv view and it wouldn't block the view out the window. Then you could place the recliner (s) facing the window and view the tv - although a 2nd recliner close to the fireplace will have less than optimum view of the tv if there is even room for a 2nd one. You could put the tv on a swing mount so it could be angled more if lots of people are gathered to watch tv.

It looks as if you don't have to use that doorway by the tv, since there is another in the dining area?

I love a curved sectional for optimum conversation comfort, as well as lots of lounging space:

Agree that sectionals are an expensive way to buy a few seats. I won’t sit on one unless I can sit next to an arm.

My new family room is 26 x 35, but no sectionals here! I bought two full-size couches plus various chairs and one recliner for DH. It’s the only place he ever sits.
