I have a pass through room between my living room and kitchen. How do I decorate this space??

The last home owner had a table pushed against the wall. I just don’t know what to do with it.

I'd paint the brick the same color as your walls, then place a used furniture piece to set the TV on. Something similar to that nice chest by your chair would be great. We had a home once that had a huge brick fake fireplace in the corner of the room. It wasn't pretty brick, so I painted it the same color as the walls. Looked great. The natural stone sections stood out more, and the brick texture added a little something, but didn't overwhelm the room. You're off to a pretty start. The room has lots of character. What do you think of perhaps centering that great starburst mirror vertically with the window? Like, lower it about 6 inches?

It's like a transom that isn't matched with a door or window. When my parents built their house they deliberately left spaces like this between several rooms and glassed them in from both sides. They can be opened (I think some of the glass slides), and they display some of their glassware etc up there, but thanks to the glass there is no dust problem. Buying some tracks for sliding glass panels and installing them yourself might not be rocket science. Even easier might be to install something fixed. You would simply get long pieces of wood, maybe 1x2s (thinner might split when you nail or screw it), and attach strips of it off-centre on the ledge itself, up the sides of the opening, and across the top. Then put a panel of plywood, glass, or plexiglass against that frame, and install a similar set of strips against that panel to hold it in. You cold get as fancy as you wanted with painting or wallpapering the plywood, using coloured or stained/leaded glass, or what have you with plexiglass. Heck, it could be a piece of artwork. You could change it out from time to time. You'd still get dust on the ledge a bit, but one of those long-handled dusters would take care of that. I also like Dilly's suggestion of hanging a panel inside the opening or across it. You could actually just treat it like a window and explore various drapery-type options such as a valance or a high curtain even - a curtain from both sides would keep the dust out. Sheers would still let light through. All you would need to install would be a rod on each side. It all depends on whether you want the light coming through and whether you care if sound etc is transmitted (good point on that one, Dilly!). KarinL

Look at the kitchens of a few of your neighbors houses. Take notes as to what types appliances they have in their kitchens. Take this information to the Kitchen Forum along with a floorplan of your home, including pantries, doorways and windows. Let them give you some general ideas of what may be accomplished. You may also want to consult with an independent kitchen planning consultant for help. We can give you lots of specific ideas about appliances, brands and features of appliances and the best use of appliances. But, we will need to first assess the space and basic requirements. While many on the forum have experienced children that go through strange food stages, we generally love to cook. We also tend to be kitchen and appliance obsessed. This means the convenience foods you are currently serving to your family are classified as emergency foods. They are not the primary types of foods we feed to our families. Even a substandard kitchen can produce good, healthy food. It can be done on a budget and it can be done quickly. A challenging kitchen just doesn't do it as nicely or efficiently as it could be done. Do not take this a criticism, but it seems foolish to make the effort and spend a lot of money on equipment that won't be used or appreciated. If you continue to feed your children a diet of frozen chicken nuggets and pizza, they will never learn to experience the full range of nature's bounty. Learning to eat well and appreciate food is a life-long process and the foundation is laid early in life. May I suggest you subscribe to one of the weekly meal delivery services and commit to cooking two or three meals a week from scratch. I use one and I have found it to be both educational, convenient and budget friendly. It would expose your family to foods that they otherwise might not experience. If you put it in front of them enough, they will eat eventually. Also, this might help you to determine what kind kitchen is needed. I use Green Chef, they are entirely organic. They have family meal options, too. There are any number of these services available to suit every need.

Don’t put stuff up there. Just leave it be. Not everything needs to be decorated. You don’t need to add embellishment to every space in a kitchen.

Dining room, maybe a smallish oval? There may be occasions when you don't want to eat at the kitchen island. Pretty room. What are the doors off that room? I don't think you would need any extra furniture since you have the built ins.

It's purpose is a dining room. But if you don't think you'll ever use it that way make it whatever you want! Set it up as an office, a reading room, craft space, yoga room....the sky is the limit!

It's definitely a dining room. You would usually put a table here for when you have company for dinner and need to seat more than a couple who can sit at the island -- most dining tables seat 6 or 8, some have leaves to seat more for holidays, etc. I'd choose something rectangular and set it just off of center, toward the left as we're looking toward the kitchen, to allow for easy access to the doors on the opposite side.

If you think you'll mostly leave it pushed out of the way, you could consider using a bench on the mirror wall side, to make that easier.

If, however, you never expect to have children or dinner guests, then I guess you could set this up as a little reading room, with a couple of arm chairs on the left wall with a table between them and a reading lamp. It would then become a place to hang out while something is cooking, etc.

If you wanted an office or reading area you could add a desk and chair or two arm chairs with ottoman facing out into the room. Not center of the room but set over to the left. Then you'd still have room to move between the living room and kitchen easily without having to circle a table every time.

If you have guests / family over, I would put a tulip table with four chairs.
