Redfeather, I lived most of my life in TX and I agree that silk greenery on top of the cabinets (and lots of it) seems to be a TX thing. We moved to the Carolinas 2 years ago and my kitchen felt so stark I put up several items on top of the cabinets to soften the look and make the kitchen feel more homey. Some of my neighbors have left the tops of their cabinets bare, but their kitchens have backsplashes with some visual interest. Personally, I like the look of the plants and I think it's a matter of personal preference and decorating style. I think your pottery would look nice grouped with greenery or baskets or some wrought iron pieces. I am posting a couple of my kitchen photos (hopefully no one will tease me too much :) ) Please disregard the tupperware and Halloween buckets! I also wanted to add that my original intent was not to put so much stuff on top of the cabinets and just do a few groupings instead. Personally, I feel like grouping smay work better in kitchens with taller spaces above the cabinets - but that's just my 2 cents : )

Print out the photo and draw a line around the room, following the cabinet tops, door/window trim and openings. You may be surprised at the levels you have going on. Cabinet tops are at various levels. The range "mantel" at another. The opening right of the chimney is another level. Windows on the left and door on the right are two more levels. I would be interested in evening out a lot of that "jagged" line, as viewed from opposite your focal point, the stone chimney. If it takes stuff on top to do that, go ahead. If paint to match the stone helps fade the variation, then do that. Experiment. You may prefer not to draw attention to the "line" at all, and will remove all of it. Or you may add items near the stone to pull the eye to it. Lots of possibilities, so just experiment and find what works for you and calms down the visual clutter, whether it is the jagged line, or the jumble of items.

Fake ivy twining all along the top would be perfect. NOT! The space is fine empty, with no decoration, usually that is best. Usually people who post with no punctuation and no photos do not return. But for others looking at this thread, IMO there is one display item that is OK on top of cabinets. (photo not mine)
