So I'm sitting next to an Evelyn bloom...
Comments (25)Hi everyone! What a very pleasant thing to read about such a lovely flower. I just got my first Evelyn bloom on a plant I bought mid-summer this year. The plants arrived right before a heat wave that almost fried them. The nursery I bought them from instructed me to pull off all the leaves so that the plants can focus on the roots and to give it a bit of shade when the temperature went above 90 degrees. I did as instructed and the plants came back very well. I was going to pull off all the new leaves again, but my husband wanted me to keep the second batch on. They continued to sprout new leaves...then buds...and then my one bloom appeared. Both plants are less than a foot tall and the flower is about 2 inches wide. Question 1 - I'm new to growing roses, so any advice would be helpful. At the moment I'm wondering if I should nip off the rest of the buds and try to get the plants to focus on their roots? We get snow here and I'm worried that these plants are too young to survive if I let the buds bloom. Question 2 - On a mature plant, how big do the blooms actually get? I can only find online sources that give the plant size, not the bloom size. Thank you and sorry for the long post....See MoreAustin's 'Evelyn' discontinued here....
Comments (37)Abraham Darby, Evelyn , and Crown Princess Margreta have all been cancelled by DA UK. I have The Lady Gardener and am not particularly impressed with it so far. Very healthy but few blooms and not particularly distinctive in either color or fragrance, but it's only a year old so will have to see next summer. In constrast, the pink rose Olivia bloomed like a fiend its first year. It is also next to Claire Austin, which pretty much has a bud for me from Spring into December now that I found the spot. I found an Evelyn sort of unexpectedly because it so unavailable generally and am eagerly awaiting its first blooms this spring. Bathsheba actually looks sort of interesing but the website shows it as sort of orangey but when you see it elsewhere, it looks much paler....See MoreBest David Austin’s?
Comments (64)Since this is a new rose bed that I started last year, do you think I should focus on only purchasing the bigger bushes that will go in the back (I want a full lush David Austin, English garden look) unless I see something I can’t resist, or just buy what I love and place smaller in front and hope I’ve left space accordingly? I hate to have to move them around. Also, regarding companion planting, do I wait till I get most of my roses in place? Although those can be easily moved in winter...See MoreEvelyn, one of my favorite David Austin climbers
Comments (38)Thanks so much, jc. I hope your Evelyns continue to grow and bloom and please you in your garden. I have four, three of which are almost 18 years old and one that is almost 10 years old. They are all grafted on Dr Huey. Three came straight from Austin, and one was an Austin purchased locally. Evelyn can be a prima donna at times. One shoots up, no matter how hard I prune her, and has long gangly canes that are a challenge in our wind. None of my plants rebloom as much as I'd like (shade is a problem for three of them). I probably need to up the fertilizer. But E likes her sun and lots of water, too. I've seen the date stamps on my photos from last year, and some were blooming at this time in May. This year they all have quite a way to go. I think it will be early June before the big show begins. But then, we had a freak snow storm just one week ago which caused some damage. Yesterday, it was 85F and we had a BBQ. What a spring. Diane...See Morestrawchicago z5
