Storm coming - how to prepare?
Comments (8)I don't know if you expect hail but when we had a bad hailstorm earlier this year my plants that were under bird netting took much less damage than those that weren't. I think a lot of the hail hit the netting before it went through which slowed its descent. Only other thing I can think of is to maybe pound some sturdy stakes in the ground to try to secure your cages. I'd also be worried about the wind picking up a vining plant like squash or melons off the ground and flinging it about like a whip....See MoreHow did you prepare your plants for hurricane Irene?
Comments (4)The application of trash bags over the ground at the base of the dahlias worked as far as keeping water from deluging them from above, and the mostly dry soil I applied under the bags was still mostly dry after the storm, but it was obvious that some water still got to the soil and roots by seeping in from the surrounding soil that was deluged with rain, but it wasnt nearly as bad as it wouldve been without the bags in place. As far as mold, I dont really see any. The only plant of mine that was damaged by the storm was a tomato, which started wilting 2.5 days after the rain was over....See MorePossible Storm what are you doing?
Comments (22)Ricky, nice to see you hanging around again. I'd say I'm cleaning my toilet bowl but that would just add kerosene to the fire. I've pulled out my six volt batteries, hooked them up in series to my 12 V DC Digital TV converter to make sure they're still good, and hooked up both my old 5" analog TVs to make sure I'll have some TV communication during the storms. Then I checked the charge on my battery operated DC/AC inverter to make sure this backup system will also allow me to watch TV coverage of the storms when an antenna-driven signal is possible...I'm a firm believer that a picture is worth a thousand words, then when all else fails I'll revert to the single malt ;-) Tom...See MoreStorms, storms, and more storms!
Comments (15)Adellabedella, I love mammatus clouds and think they are the coolest-looking thing. We see them a lot down here along the Red River on severe T-storm type days. If I am in the garden and see them magically 'appearing' in the sky, I drop what I am doing and flip my fire radio over to the NOAA weather channel to listen to it for a while. If I see rapid T-storm development off to our west, south or southwest plus mammatus clouds, I go inside to check the NWS website and the radar. When you watch the weather closely, you soon learn which clouds are a cause for concern and which are not. Sometimes my storm spotter DH comes outside looks at the clouds and tries to drag my inside the house or at least voices his concern that I "should" come inside. Carol, I am sure they got all that rain. I watched their storms on radar all night long. After I attempted to go to sleep, the weather radio went off every 15 minutes for one of the storms out west. All I could think of was that I'd surely be celebrating the great rainfall if I lived there! They've been so dry for so long. And, no, our weather radio isn't set for that county because it is so far west, but it is set for counties closer to it, like Montague County in TX, and Jefferson, Carter and Garvin Counties in OK. A lot of the storms that were hitting Cotton County were eventually brushing parts of the counties we do have programmed into the radio, so the thing kept going off. I didn't sleep much and was tempted to turn the darn thing off but would never do that for safety reasons, of course. George, I'm glad you got rain. Y'all sure did need it. That's a bit too close for a funnel cloud though! Dawn...See Moreanneliese32
