We'd like to have some flexibility so were even consideirng chairs on swivel facing each other on either side of a small-ish sofa but you still have the back of the sofa creating a barrier between the kitchen zone and the lounging zone. May be unavoidable since the TV is above the fireplace centered in the room.

I argued to have the TV to the right of the fireplace on a stand/table so the seating area could then be shifted closer to the windows and further from the 3 stairs that go down into the room. Oh, I lost...ha.

You'll get more responses if you also post pictures from different angles. Even if you don't like what you have going on now it helps people gain perspective. You should also show us your kitchen as the style of your great room will have to be the same.

Have I posted this in the wrong spot? I recall the group providing some excellent help back when I was doing the renovation.

If this were my room, I would consider two sofas at right angles to the TV wall. An end table at one end of each sofa....with lamps on them. If room, another chair at kitchen end of the sofas.

Having said this, a better suggestion: look at photos here and on other sites to see rooms like yours. Notice what you like; what would work for you. As things look now, you are lacking color in the room; you need additional lighting: floor lamps and/or table lamps; drapes with pattern and color would be lovely. All these choices will make the room personal to you. Black, beige and white, while "neutral" are also very bland...and boring.

Do you like sectionals? I think a nice L shaped sectional with back facing the windows and kitchen would work great here. Here are a couple sectional suggestions. Use your leather accent chair as well. Place a console table behind sectional facing kitchen. Add a couple nice table lamps and please add a lovely large house plant in a great pot in the corner by the windows and fireplace.

Thanks for the great insights. I've been leaning toward the two couches at right angles to the TV concept plus a chair (2?) that face the TV directly. However, then you end-up with the backs of chairs facing the kitchen. Not terrible but they'd feel like they're floating in the middle of room a bit.

That sofa we have in there now is a sectional that's very sturdy from Ethan Allen but has seen better days! We'll replace it all. I'm looking at ideas on FurnitureLand's site and I want excellent quality that's sturdy and lasts.

I have a big Hancock & Moore club chair upstairs and it's great but HUGE and really belongs in a library or den IMO. But it's not being used much now. It doesn't fit our desgn esthetic pereferences either. It might be nice to have chairs that have a reclining capability but I have yet to find a recliner that looks good to me. I really don't care about a back tilting back...just the footrest if it'll work for a big lug like me so it's also tough without trying something first.

I agree re color, this has been one of those situations where just plopped that stuff in the room as placeholders and there they sit...still. Ha.

Yes, well I also think that furniture set up would work great in there. Two sofas with one or two chairs. Have fun choosing something! The room is already wonderful, will look great when done!

@Steve Really nice room & finishes. I’m having hard time seeing the overall room size measurements of the great room side of space but did have a couple of random thoughts while studying your pics. It feels like seating furniture is huddled together on one end of area rug & lots of emptiness around it. Doesn’t seem like all that space needed for traffic path. Before investing in or deciding on new furniture, I’d play with different arrangements using exisiting stuff to get a feel for what to add or replace it with. Even though chaise is at wrong end of sofa, place it with back to windows & close to the windows - no traffic path behind it - to see how that feels. If you get a sectional, that seems best spot for it - i think though a sectional would be too limiting for placement & seating. Also try sofa with back to steps on the other side of room - does that feel closed off or ok? This exercise should tell you if having two sofas facing each other & at right angles to FP will work & also how much space is needed behind for walkway. Maybe two chairs is better? Placing chairs where the sofa sits now will open a path to kitchen. The wall to right of FP looks like 7' so it needs more than a plant - a chair & end table? A console or shelving unit? My other random thought Is that the only color in the space is the two great poster art pieces on either side of FP. I'd want a rug with some of those colors in it also. I would also like to add those colors to kitchen with counter accessories - bowls bowls, cannisters etc. I realize your kitchen pics are just post construction so kitchen likely looks lived in now! ☺️ And, I'd get , a larger rug too - place only the front legs of sofa & chairs on the rug.

@KW, thanks for the ideas. I've got another room at the front of the house that has a loveseat and a couple of chairs so I can use some of that to experiment in the great room.

The ceilings are 10' btw but now I see that you're referring to the horizontal dimension...yes...that Lithograph is very lonely.
