Advice on furniture placement and accessorizing our living room
Comments (12)I was thinking something along the lines of this... You can use the colors of the rug, like the terracotta, in your pillows on the chairs. It's too bad you don't have room for the alternative placement of the TV, and in that case I would get a console to put catty-corner on the walls next to the fireplace on the right, even though the windows will be behind the TV. Since you say this is not your permanent home perhaps that will do as a stopgap measure. The couch should be facing the fireplace, unless you want to angle everything to face the TV. The chairs will go perpendicular to the couch. The fireplace nook you can fill with a painting or perhaps an arrangement of blue and white Chinese porcelain (have a look at etsy). With a beautiful rug I'd suggest a glass and metal coffee table so the rug design shows through. You'd also need side tables but I see no way that you can have lamps without trailing cords. Find a way to display books on the tables, which give a lived-in look. Pardon me if I use pictures of my home to illustrate some of these points; your taste may be quite different, but it's just to give you some ideas. This rug is made of polypropylene and therefore much more affordable, but you can see how these colors would brighten your room and give you colors for pillows on your couch and chairs. You can find rugs on e-bay, overstock.com, pottery barn, just google area rugs and then indicate "traditional" or "oriental" and you'll find lots of ideas....See MoreFurniture placement in the living room

Comments (7)Near the patio door, I'd put a nice sized console/buffet on that wall. This can hold anything you need to carry from the kitchen to the patio. Put your TV on that large wall with the sofa facing it. The dining table would go near the window that is close to the kitchen....See MoreHelp with sunken living room furniture placement, please!
Comments (18)I was thinking that if you put 2 comfortable swivel chairs to the right as you step in (one would be partially at the fireplace), then to the left there would be one continuous curve of sofa to give you the 5/6 other seats you need. In front of that sofa seating put a huge ottoman or table. For lighting, if you can't squeeze a console with enough surface space for lamps, you could probably find a multi-arm floor lamp to put in the far left corner behind the sofa,, and a skinny floor lamp at the window end of the sofa just for reading. I think if you pick the "right" swivel and sofa your husband doesn't have to give up his massage chair, but that means you'd need to be willing to live with bold fat contemporary furniture everywhere, not the usual demure stuff. Shock of the new, and it might be way too much in the contet of your whole house. Whatever you do I think you should consider at the end whether an area rug with very dark tones in it helps make your sunken living room more of a choice than an irritating mistake....See Moreingrid_vc so.
