Living room furniture ideas and placement

I have no ability to visualize a room and this room drives me crazy and it’s so boring.

i will be buying new furniture and repainting the tables and tv stand cream.

The rug and drapes have a turquoise color.

The room connects to the family room and to the entry. It addition to the two entries, there is a larg3 window.

We MAY be selling the house so i don’t want to put a fortune into the room, but this room is screaming for help.

Any suggestions on where to place furniture or anything else to change the room?

I don't think it's bad; I just think you're looking for a change of scenery. The least expensive route is the following: change the color of the walls - perhaps a light tan. I'd paint the trim a light color and switch out the curtains to a more modern look. I'm not to keen on pattern in a curtain, but that's me. Maybe a plain sheer that matches the blinds would work well - something classic that won't go out of style. I know you didn't ask about the orange walls, but if you're selling your house, the first thing to go should be any non-neutral colors on the walls. Another thing you'll want to do is figure out your style. Mine is eclectic, which means I like different styles and I bring them together with color or texture. In top search box, look up different styles, so you can pick out the one that fits you best. Some styles include traditional, modern, transitional, shabby chic, Hollywood, country.

I was thinking something along the lines of this... You can use the colors of the rug, like the terracotta, in your pillows on the chairs. It's too bad you don't have room for the alternative placement of the TV, and in that case I would get a console to put catty-corner on the walls next to the fireplace on the right, even though the windows will be behind the TV. Since you say this is not your permanent home perhaps that will do as a stopgap measure. The couch should be facing the fireplace, unless you want to angle everything to face the TV. The chairs will go perpendicular to the couch. The fireplace nook you can fill with a painting or perhaps an arrangement of blue and white Chinese porcelain (have a look at etsy). With a beautiful rug I'd suggest a glass and metal coffee table so the rug design shows through. You'd also need side tables but I see no way that you can have lamps without trailing cords. Find a way to display books on the tables, which give a lived-in look. Pardon me if I use pictures of my home to illustrate some of these points; your taste may be quite different, but it's just to give you some ideas. This rug is made of polypropylene and therefore much more affordable, but you can see how these colors would brighten your room and give you colors for pillows on your couch and chairs. You can find rugs on e-bay, overstock.com, pottery barn, just google area rugs and then indicate "traditional" or "oriental" and you'll find lots of ideas.

Great, thanks! I would use a round table that can extend to oval when you have company in the dining area, right over near the kitchen. One chair backing into the corner, rather than a chair with its back to the kitchen door. The desk can stay right where you have it in this photo. Sofa on the wall with the windows with a side table at each end. Two chairs across from it with a table between them. I sketched a pic but can't post comments on my phone, boo :(

Hard to say without knowing what your section looks like. But try thinking outside the box. Sometimes angling furniture pieces works better that squaring everything up (like we're used to doing). It can look fresh and custom and make the space more usable. Or mount the tv to the side of the FP and have the sectional in that large area to the left of the fp, with a cozy sitting area (a couple of chairs and a table) in front of the fireplace.

I agree that the wall color should be lighter; I would suggest an off-white. Instead of the group of tiny photographs (family photographs are better grouped together on a table if you must have them in a public space) I would find a large painting that you love and place it there instead. Instant impact! I would suggest curtains in a thicker material similar to the color of the walls, without a pattern. A sleek metal and glass coffee table (it can have two levels like yours) will enlarge the space and give the room a lighter, more edgy feel. Since you mentioned the word boring, I would say your lamps belong in that category. I'm afraid your rug reads as very casual/beachy, and I think you can find something prettier and more suitable for a living room. You also want the rug to be at least large enough to place the front legs of your seating furniture on it. Your chairs look comfortable, but three of them in this not very large room are rather overpowering. I would find smaller versions for at least two, or have only two in the room unless you need all of them for seating. I imagine all this is a bit more than you envisioned, but you can select what seems workable for you, if anything.

Pick furniture that doesn't take up a lot of room. That means narrow arm rests and backs.

If you can find smaller chairs, place one in directly in front of the window and the other across it so that the couch and chairs form an elongated U shape.
