Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

looking for kitchen remodel layout feedback

I’ve drawn out this to scale and looking for feedback! This is a gut down to the studs job. However no structural changes will be made except- adding 12” to the right opening and adding and repositioning windows above the countertops. Thanks in advance!

on the right side next to the entrance. it’s a standard depth but deep. GE cafe. it says refrigerator but it’s showing up light!!! the big box on the right!!

I'm always a dissenter here, but probably because I"m older than dirt! I couldn't care less about the arrangement of the sink/stove/refrig - I do what fits best in the space available and that often does not work except in a new build. What I DO like is lots and lots of counterspace, plenty of upper cabinets as well as lower (I have a TON of dishes), lots of light, a sink under a window, and a stove on an outside wall so it can be properly vented (if not on outside, there must be a pretty straight shoot out or even the best hood will not work well). I've never had a kitchen big enough for an island but my daughter has one. If I did, I would not want ANYTHING on top of that island - no prep sink, no cooktop. I'm not a fan of prep sinks but perhaps the young eat way more fresh veggies than I do. Kitchens are highly individual spaces. What works for one person may well drive another out of their mind. Think about what dishes/equipment you have, how you use your kitchen, and what matters to you. If you do, it should turn out right. No KD on earth can truly live in YOUR head!

I like MamaGoose's second layout. I don't think the refrigerator will block the FR view b/c there's a wall there that continues past the refrigerator. As long as you don't haven't any seats on the short end of the island on the DR side, I think you will be OK with 51" or so b/w the island DR table. I'd prefer 54", but 51" will work. I would not go any less b/c that is most likely going to be a busy aisle going to/from the Family Room and the Mudroom & the rest of the house. It looks like your island is sized nicely with at least a 15-inch overhang + the 1" for the decorative doors/end panels on the back of the island cabinets. Aim for aisles around 48" to/from the items that stick out into the aisles the farthest (e.g., refrigerator doors/handles, counter edges, etc.). Don't measure them cabinet-to-cabinet - that's incorrect.

With the possibility of multiple cooks in the house, and children who will also be learning to cook and help in the kitchen, I'd include a prep sink on the island. Helpers can load or unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without crossing into the prep path. I increased the seating overhang to 15"--the minimum recommended by the NKBA.I, too, live in a multi-generational, multi-cook, household--my daughter, her husband, and their two children live with me. I love my second sink!

Hi Patricia, Thanks for your feedback. Yes, sounds like a real kitchen designer may be helpful, perhaps more than the free Traemand/IKEA kitchen designer. Do you have advice about how to find a kitchen designer who specializes in IKEA components? Most KDs I found are generalists who are more used to working with custom cabinet makers than IKEA. Inspired Kitchen Design is the main one that pops up time and time again when I search for IKEA kitchen design but I can't tell if they are going to be about the same as the IKEA KD. Also, what's the expected price range of a KD that specializes in IKEA kitchens? I found some designers who charge more than what I expect the IKEA cabinets would cost and I wondered if that's normal and expected.

Ok so it’s too far from the sink and the island (which is probably too deep) is in the way. You’d need a prep sink on the island, but 3 sinks is probably overkill. I’d nix the cabinets on the right wall, make the island 2 feet longer, and put the fridge to the right of the stove.

Your island appears to be over 6' in both directions, which is too large for a single slab and too large to reach across.

thanks so much—I so appreciate the feedback. yes there is a prep sink on the top right of the island and also on the breakfast / drinks bar….i also have a fridge/freezer drawer on the breakfast bar. here is a video of a DIY facelift I gave it when we moved in—well it won’t let me 🤦🏼‍♀️

I see what you are saying. we are on a lake and the left wall is lower cabinets only with full windows across. something like this

and the fridge is super deep so I was using the current walk in pantry to recess it. I’ve had 2 large walk ins in the past and they just get cluttered so this final time I was going to use cabinets and pantry near each prep space.

so sorry the scale did not show in picture. each tic mark represents 6”
or 8 squares = 1 foot. so the island is roughly 4.5 feet long and 3.5 wide-ish. def trying to keep it around 120” for the slab.

Hire an actual kitchen designer who is knowledgeable about the required clearances, as well as other limitations that you have not considered.

At 4.5’ long, your island can only fit 2 stools. Definitely lose the cabinets on the right as I mentioned above. Keep the pantry as-is. You have a separate dining room, I hope.

You need large deep drawers instead of lower cabinets.

If 8 squares = 1 foot, it appears your refrigerator and sink base are less than 2' wide on your plan.
