New Pool Build in Pasadena, CA - June 16, 2015
Comments (67)Hi Frank. Masterpiece did the design too, which ended up having approximately 3 revisions before it was perfected. This was done during the vendor evaluation phase before we signed a contract. I was glad they understand customers want to have the design and approve it before making a choice on the builder. Besides, how are builders supposed to give you a bid without having a design to price out? Most of the vendors we met with did this, except 1 fancy-pants builder who wanted us to pay him $500 to come up with a design. That didn't appeal to us. For the landscaping side of the project, it was done by a company that is owned by an employee of Masterpiece, Ron Bond. Ron is the designer and salesman for Masterpiece so we put in a lot of hours with him and knew him well. Technically the landscaping was done by a different company, but in reality it was seamless and is easier for me to say the whole project was done by Masterpiece due to the relationships. I paid Ron's company directly for the landscaping work and he has good prices and of course intimate knowledge in the entire project scope. Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you. We are really happy with our pool, spa, landscaping and the whole build process (minus the city inspectors... LOL). There are 3 other families in our little group who have signed with Masterpiece too and are in varying stages of their builds (we got to know 2 of these families through Houzz - 1 during our vendor eval process & the other from this specific blog -- Houzz is so helpful!). I'm very happy for them and for Masterpiece because our new friends are in good hands with Masterpiece, and Masterpiece has earned my respect and appreciation so I'm glad to see a healthy backlog for them too. Good luck with your project! I'd love to follow you so please let me know when you get started....See MoreAdvice on sod for house in Culver City, CA
Comments (1)"Some areas of shade" would be where the UC Verde dies out. You would need an alternative plan for those areas. But if you get "late night and early morning low clouds, burning off by 11," then you could get away with the Medallion Plus. If you wear a light jacket most days in the summer, you could get away with Medallion. But if you are are east of that zone of morning fog, then I'd be looking more at St Augustine instead. The problem with fescue in CA and SoCal is the watering requirement to keep it alive. You might check with the Medallion sod supplier to see if they can point you to see some of it growing in your area. Also call Descanso Gardens and Huntington Library and ask what grasses they have growing in their gardens. Those places are worth a trip to the Pasadena area. Comments (7)Turf is terrible for the environment & St. Augustine is quite a beast if you ever want to remove it. I think the best grass these days is actually a native groundcover... it goes by many names but is most commonly called Kurapia. Great for dogs, soccer, doesn't need to be mowed (stays 2" high) and only needs water once a week (or less in winter). I'm a professional landscape designer in the area and my clients alll can't say enough good things about it drawbacks: big upfront price tag because the current market form was hybridized in Japanese labs and is tightly controlled by the venture capitalists who did it. BUT it's only a third the cost of artificial turf. Bees also love its blossoms when it flowers in spring. Though a quick mow can take care of these I don't recommend it for family's with bee allergies. more info: all about kurapia...See MoreBackyard no man's zone? Grass or no grass? Need your creativity!
Comments (15)I would check locally on grass varieties and mixes. I put in 1600 square feet of lawn, using a blend that the local sod farm recommends for my zone 9 location. It's a very small lawn, I can mow it in less than 30 minutes with a battery operated mower and it doesn't use that much water. IF you want a place for kids and dogs to play, nothing beats turfgrass. But the concerns voiced here are legitimate, so see what kind of grass is available and exactly how much water you are talking about. Your space is small - less than 1/2 of mine - but it would provide an ample play area and a rest for the eyes. I looked at all of the artificial grass options that i could find before I put in the lawn and they all got hot when in the sun. Turfgrass actually stays cool....See Moredchall_san_antonio
