Mage Quest is my only applique daylily, it’s a good performer here.

Magic Lake is a nice daylily blooming in a bit too much shade with my hosta.

Moonlit Masquerade is a long time staple in the garden. It was relocated and didnt skip a beat last season.

Mighty Chestnut, not my favorite color but a decent performer. This photo is deceiving, it is a russet in color.

Mini Pearl is a bloom machine in a shady spot…. blooms later in the season.

Metaphor

Mary Todd, the first daylily I put in my garden in 1993. It has been shared often.

Morrocan Sunrise is a great daylily. It has a consistently high bud count here.

Mary’s Baby is a beautiful sunfast daylily…..glad I listened to Maryl and added this one.

Mr Skeffington is getting established.

Minnesota Morning was a bonus…..it had first bloom last season.

Mulberry Truffle had first bloom last season.

I like so many of these I get frustrated that I'm listing too many and I start losing track and keep scrolling up to get the names right. I tried writing them down on paper but then the list starts looking ridiculous after a couple of days and there's only a couple people posting so far today. I guess I'm just too lazy or need higher standards. But I do really like Mage Quest and I think Mary's Baby could replace a similar one I have that doesn't look as good. I also like Minnesota Morning and Magic Amethyst and Mask and Metaphor but then I see Metaphysical Moment and Michael Bennet and MOSES IN THE BULLRUSHES!!! Wow forget all those other ones. It feels overwhelming but I like Mystery of the Ages too and it looks good next to Moses in the Bullrushes (sorry for screaming earlier). I love a lot of the softer, subtler pastel colors in my garden, but looking at pictures here, its always the ones that pop that catch my attention.

I am feeling a bit verbose today. If you don't like it you can always skip ahead to the pics. I added Mad Max last year based on how it looked at the seller's farm and looking for later blooming daylilies to extend the season. This is at the end of July. It must have looked less brown in person and I liked the triangular green throat, veins and the bright yellow midrib.

Seeing nice full scapes helps too. Then after I planted it here, it looks like this. Must be one of those that lose the color saturation in the sun/heat of the day which is interesting to me, but I don't think it ever looked like it did at the farm (yet). We'll see this year.

I also added Moments Rich in Blessing, but was very disappointed when I got it home and the bulk of the roots were not attached to any crown so I was left with just this single fan and small roots.

Pity as they had dug it with a sizeable root ball. I let it finish blooming here as I figured it had already expended the energy to create the blooms. It put out new foliage the rest of the season so I'm very hopeful it survives.

One of my first Daylily purchases after we moved to Ohio was Morning Cheerfulness based on how it looked in our Southern California garden. It never looked like it did there. Nor does the pic in the daylily database look like it. I miss that shiny, pure pink it had in So. Cal. Now I wonder if I ever really had Morning Cheerfulness before. I ended up giving it away last year (and put the new MRiB (above) in its place).

Debra, I see your post with Facemaker. It's a beautiful flower--too bad the bud count is low. I also like Foolish Kisses, Four No Trump and Fighting Fire. We love Free Wheelin' here, but it's not a great grower in our climate. It doesn't increase much and doesn't have many buds, but it blooms every year. Here are some of our F's. We bought Fantasy and Dreams because it is registered as late. I am not sure I like it though. Feanorian Lamps is finally getting going after it was smashed when the pine tree fell and then subsequently moved. Flame of the West is a robust plant with good height to the scape. It's orange so it's popular here. We we thrilled to find Flamingo Carousel, but I'm not sure it's identified correctly. Fox Point is a great grower, but it's not very showy. The flower is on the small side. For some reason we lost our first Fruitful Discovery. We bought it again and this one is doing great. We have a nice seedling out of it crossed with Wolverine. Sherry, that shot of Indian Giver is gorgeous! Indian Ripple is also beautiful. Amazingly enough, it is an orange that we don't have, probably because it is a diploid. Infinity and Beyond is another that caught my eye. The name bugs me, though. I think it should be 'To Infinity and Beyond'. Anyway, thats what Buzz Lightyear said in Toy Story. Here are some of our I's. Here is a close-up of I Lava You. We can't wait to see this at clump strength. Impassioned is an exciting one--normally more bitone than this picture shows. Irish Vampire Fangs almost died its first year, but now it's doing fine. I don't love the color though. I think it's a bit muddy. This photo shows it better than it really is. Isla Morada is a southern bred that hasn't done very well here. It was purchased because of the bubbly colored edge (which you can't really see in this photo because of the recurve of the petals). Sherry - I was looking at this thread again and noticed your comment about daylilies with fewer scapes having more buds. This is something I've really noticed since I've been hybridizing. My seedlings tend to have more buds the first two-three years they bloom. Once they grow into large clumps, the bud counts go down. I think that's a good reason to divide large clumps into smaller divisions. Debra

Jean Deaver's Dream was very disappointing here (smallish blooms, slow growth and bud count)--just something to consider for anyone from the North yearning for it. Of course, sometimes cultivars do better farther north with snow cover. (Or they might perform in 6B--substantial difference between here and North Carolina or Kentucky.) Moonlight Sail also tenderish weak here, but it's still out there. Silver Sword is nice, but slow to multiply here. Lydia's Regal Robe looked good this year, though bud count still modest. Free the Captives has purplish tones early in the morning, moves to reddish tones, and gradually becomes lighter. Vigorous and tall. The X Files is striking, but plant habit is a bit sprawling. Ashwood Dark Side may fit better as a deep red. Lost in Translation is quite short but a vibrant color. Definitely front row. Sultry Girls looked good this year.

Sherry: You know I have a weakness for yellow and I love your Mary Todd. I miss mine. So happy to see yours growing so magnificently. I lost my Mary's Baby to the arctic freeze last year and had a devil of a time trying to find it again from a rust free source. Now I see Oakes has it this year in their catalog. I'm glad that more people have a chance to buy it from a rust free source and try it themselves. My other favorite of yours is Metaphor. It has that corduroy look to the petals that I find so appealing............David: Mystery of the Ages is my favorite, but the white star on Mary Alice Stokes sure draws my eye.....................Maryl

Sherry - Moroccan Sunrise sure is impressive with all those buds! Mage Quest is showing such a nice applique and has gorgeous color!

David - Mystery of the Ages is a pretty one. Mask and Metaphor and Metaphysical Moment are my kind of daylilies. I used to grow both, but grubs got M and M, and Metaphysical died in a pot one bad winter. Your clump of Megatron is stunning!

Sherry, your picture of Mary's Baby is beautiful. It is so hard to photograph but I think you correctly captured it. Of the others I like the rich color of Midnight Raider and the fancy purple Mystery of the Ages. Also Maney Augustine always catches my eye.

Here are a few of our M's.

I can't wait to see Man-eating Bat at clump strength. It was just a single fan when purchased so it has taken it awhile.

Martha Edson Norris is one of Richard Norris' big flat diploids.

Maynard Max was hybridized by a friend of ours. I just wish it would set seed.

Merely Mystical is pretty but not really my color. It will be leaving the garden this spring (part of the downsizing).

I worry that Mermaid Princess is not very hardy. It doesn't seem to increase much.

Merry Moppet is a frustrating daylily. It often doesn't open well. It would be gone if hadn't proven itself a good parent. The offspring don't seem to have the opening problem.

Millicent Bystander reblooms faithfully for us in September.

We divided Mitch Lynd, which set it back for a while, but now it's making a come back.

Moving Forward is a southern that does well for us.

Mulan was a bonus plant. I don't think it will stay in the garden.

My Little Tea Set is one of my favorite small flowers. It grows well for us, has beautiful form, and sets seeds.

I almost forgot our two new intros.

Mayan Warrior has some of the most intense color in the garden.

Muy Caliente! is a wonderful landscape daylily. It produces lots of scapes and seems to be in bloom for a long time. As you might imagine, it's one of Bob's favorites.

Debra, Mayan Warrior is a semi-evergreen tetraploid that blooms midseason. It has rebloomed for us. It's on the short side at 24 inches, but the 6 inch flowers are above the foliage. It has an average of 4 way branching and 20 buds but we have seen it as high as 30 buds. Its parentage is Pumpkin Prince X Gavin Petit.

Muy Caliente! is named for Bob's fondness for Mexican food. At our favorite Mexican restaurant, we are always warned that the plates are 'caliente'. That is what inspired the name. It is taller at 36 inches with 3 branches and 16 buds. We have seen as many as 23 buds. While the bud count is not high, it produces many scapes. When we divided our clump, we pulled 23 scapes (I don't think I got them all). It also reblooms. It is mid late with 5 or 5.5 inch flowers (I can't remember). It is also a tet and is dormant. Its parentage is Apache War Dance X Sea of Cinders.

Nan - Impressive stats on both of those intros! The look of Mayan Warrior appeals to me more, but Muy Caliente! sounds like a great landscape plant. Great work on those two!

I wondered if Spanish names would be appproved. I want to name my big orangey red seedling after a local Mexican restaurant, if I end up registering it.

Debra, I think the only foreign names not allowed are Latin ones because they are used for scientific nomenclature. The exception is common Latin phrases usually from law or the church. Bret Clement uses Latin phrases from law and the church in some of his intros. For example, Habeas Corpus and Salve Regina are two of Bret's intros.

We don't really speak Spanish. We speak restaurant Spanish--just enough to say hello, goodbye, to ask for a napkin or tell the server we don't want sour cream, etc.
