71” space with 60” tub with shower: ledge for extra space?

Hi there, we have a 60 inch tub with shower we’re playing into a space with a length of 71”. We’re thinking for the extra 11” we’ll have a sort of tiled bench/ledge. I was hoping this could be flush with the tub, but our contractor let us know it needs to be higher for drainage. The only example photos I’ve been able to find are…not the nicest. And I don’t understand why the ledges are so high. Some examples attached.

Anyone have ideas on how to make this look a bit more pleasing? We are not going to do built in shelves because there is a shower.

I do think Lisa’s example looks nice, but like she suggests, it shouldn’t be done if there is a shower.

I have a ledge like you pictured, and it works very well for us. I think you can search my posts back to my bathroom remodel several years ago if you’re interested to see it.

I looked at a million tubs that would fit into our 60x30 space. Regarding deeper cast iron 60x30 tubs, there are two that I know of: 1) The tub you were kinda mentioning - Porcher Nouveau from the Ardennes Collection. Unfortunately this tub has since been discontinued, but you may be able to find someone who still has stock. The tub has a height of 19.6" (vs Villager 14") and an overflow height of 12.8" (vs Villager 8.6"), however it is a pricey tub (almost 4 times the cost of the Villager)...so you would have to decide if the extra depth is worth the extra cost. 2) Toto FBY1515LP - This tub has a height of 14.7" and an overflow height of 10.5", but again is much more than the Kohler Villager (almost 3 times the cost) so again, you would have to decide if the 2 inches of deeper water is worth another $600+ dollars. On a side note, it isn't necessarily what I would call deeper (although it is a half inch deeper), but the Kohler Bellwether is a nice looking tub. Has a plainer/simpler apron. Reasonable price, but a little pricer than the Villager...but again, isn't going to give you that deep tub you are looking for. Good Luck. I would have to say selecting the tub has the been the toughest decision on our hall bathroom remodel.

Wanted to say thanks to all who posted here and raised other perspectives, offered suggestions and in general made me think about things I probably had not thought of before. Very helpful and very appreciated. I managed to go out and see some empty tubs today but even that helped me see some things. At this point I am going to visit with my contractor to see if there is any reasonable way to fit a 66 inch tub into the bathroom. I am 6 ft 1 and while I can fit inside the 60 inch it is an easier fit to go one size up. Sometimes seeing is helpful! My list is now fairly short: Kohler Underscore Aquatic Serenity 35 Mirabelle Edenton 36x66 or 36x60 I had thought about the MTI Andrea 11 but pricing there starts to climb rapidly and there just comes a point where I have to say "enough". If I spent 60 minutes every day in the tub an in line heater, arm rests etc might be a good idea. One thing about the Serenity that was good to see is how high and wide the borde rof tub is. Definitely will require a long reaching faucet and I wonder if climbing out an dover will be difficult (tub I saw today was not yet set up in its box) The Aquatic certainly looked ok. As did the Mirabelle (lowest price option). I did not see the Edenton but one similar. Overall I am probably somewhat partial to the Kohler underscore "look" but then it wa salso undermounted. I do prefer an under mount appearance but not sure I want to go there. Seems more involved for the installation. I also need to see what the 240V aspects will cost for the install (not sure I have space in breaker box). Still deciding but the list is very much smaller now! Water depth on all of these tubs is more than deep enough.. 17.5 to almost 19 inches to overflow.

We actually did make them full depth. In reality we don't really use the full depth but we looked at it as a free option in case we ever did need to. You could probably find some long bins/storage containers to get more use out of it but we didn't really need to. We found a super thin hamper to put in the bottom area but sometimes hide a small vacuum back there as well.

Here I went and found some pics of mine. We have a shower curtain that we open to that side, so it does usually stay covered.

That does look lovely! I am sorry I didn't see your post earlier. We have just created a sort of niche at the back of the tub to deal with an extra 6" of soace and I would love to know if you think we should do an "accent" tile or keep it in the same 4 x 12 subway tile the rest of the surround will have? The space is about 20" x 42" . We may have made a poor decision but I think the choice of tile will "make or break it".

I would start your own thread if you’re up to it! I think that definitely can be made into a feature, but you’re right to be careful with how you finish it off. Can you post any more pictures of the bathroom with info about the rest of the space? Flooring, walls, vanity, etc? One option could be a solid large format porcelain tile. Or if you can’t find one quite that big, then strategically place a shelf at the seam where two tiles meet. Shelf might be good anyway since it’s such a tall space. Or add a bit of framing in the middle to make it into two separate niches (just tall enough to fit a row 1-2 tiles high). So many options!
