Stain for white oak floor when there are older floors

We are completing a renovation/addition. On the first floor, it's mostly open floor plan with white oak floor. The threshold for the front door, one room off to the side of the entryway and the stairs going upstairs (there will be a runner) are the original hard wood floor (our house is 100 years old).

I need to pick a stain for the new floor. It meets the old floor at the bottom of the stairs and at the thresholds for the front door and the separate tv room. I want to complement the old floors but also do not want to clash with the new kitchen cabinets, which are grey tones. Included are pictures of the kitchen, the 6 stains I sampled and two pictures of the existing floor. I love how the kitchen turned out and am afraid the floor will look terrible with the colors. At the same time, it will look odd to have something SO different run up to the older floor. Help!

It all needs to be the same. Light to Medium brown.

you are never going to match pine and red oak, nor should you try. it will look horrible against your new kitchen.

So, stay away from the red based statins. on red oak it's just going to intensify, and they don't go w/your kitchen colors.

If you want dark, go w/the walnut stains. they are usually an ashy or green base which will cancel out the red tones

this one is Dark Walnut

look at Bona natural stains. w/your beautiful kitchen I'd concentrate on that.

you aren't giving a big enough picture to see where the new wood meets the old wood. anything you can bridge that gap with like a large runner or something? this way you won't see the old and new meet up at the threshold.

stains for the red oak:

This one is Rustic Beige from Duraseal. This tone might work w/your kitchen cabs/tile, and won't look horrible against your yellow pine.

This is red oak stained with Bona- 1/2 natural, 1/4 gray and 1/4 jacobean w/3 coats of satin clear.

Same here. I extended my carpeted area to hardwood flooring. My contractor put new red oak in place of white oak and the stain stick out like a soar thumb. I don't know what to do. We haven't poly'ed yet. Any suggestions please?

I went with white oak also because I didn't want red undertones. My flooring co said red oak will usually have red undetones regardless of what color stain is applied. Mine are stained with a mix of 75% Jacobean and 25% Coffee Black (similar to Dark Walnut from the more common stain company). I love them! Not so dark that the show every single speck of dust or cat hair. That sounds like a cleaning nightmare to me! And shout out to Nini whose floor is my inspiration. She graciously supplied her formula to me so I could try to replicate her beautiful floors!

When you add a finish to white oak it darkens, as do all hardwoods. So a clear finish on your white oak is going to be darker than I think you are looking for. Scandinavian floors are often white washed. I love the Flooring Girl Blog. Has some great information. Does your floor manufacturer make a matching stair cladding? If you do that, you don’t need to have oak treads. Another option is to do a beautiful contrasting color of stain on the stairs. You could pull the colors together with handrail or baluster or post colors. Adding a runner on the stairs, or painting the risers would give you more options to tie in the floor colors. If you really want to match wood, dark stain is worth a try, but lighter colors are really tough. I matched a red oak transition strip to a dark chocolate brown stone tile once. I had to keep mixing and adding stain. It worked only because it was a dark brown color. It’s hard to neutralize red and yellow tones.
