Wanted! Hearing Aid Info.
Comments (13)Well after checking with ENT I decided to do some research, so Google here I am!I found a place called Hearing Planet & called them. They sent me lots of literature on their products avail. It seems they are some sort of clearing house between manufacturer and audiologists. They set up an appointment for me with a hearing aid firm right here in town. Went to him and yes his degrees in this field were visible and authentic. In some cases he could beat the price of that which H.Planet quoted. After he recommended the type that I would need, he called H.Planet & told them about the difference. They agreed on his price, which saved me a few dollars, then he took the ear canal impressions and in about 12 days I went in for the fitting. I'm impressed by the service I get from H.Planet and this young audiologist has been very thorough., I couldn't leave his office till I got the hang of inserting the device, then he fine tuned it for me and I go back in a week to see if I need more adjustments. Total amount was $2300. with cleaning kit, travel kit & a supply of batteries, etc. However when I went outside to parking lot, I soon found out what a noisey world I live in. Biggest thrill and also the scaryest. The traffic noises, plus a weird noise in my car upset me till I realized the directional lever was on. At home, every footstep on my hardwood floors was heard. Passed by telephone just as it rang, nearly blew my head off. I'm sorry about the long story but this is going to be one more adventure in my life & I'm so excited, especially hearing the outside sounds. Oh yes, when I got home I had a tub of laundry to do and the dishwasher was loaded. At first I thought everything was broken with all the splashing from washer and the water cycles that the dishwasher was making. It's been so long since I've heard these sounds that every creaky noise I hear now is a signal to investigate it.My thanks to all of you who guided me through this procedure. Do first things first!...See MoreHearing aids
Comments (9)I know several people who have purchased hearing aids in the last few years, and all who have not received them through an L&I work related claim have gone to Costco. One exception, and that man can spend $5000-$6000 about like most of us would spend $500-$600 and never miss it so he went locally for convenience. Closest Costco is an hour away. Just had a talk with DH last night, this is the year he needs to go for a hearing check. I'm really feeling like I say everything at least twice, or he's asking what I said and I'm annoyed at repeating myself - either way, not normal flow of conversation. Just the other day, as I got up from my computer and walked past him in his chair, I said about an elderly friend, 'C called today and said her sister had died.' His response, 'OK, I'll get that for you my first trip out to the garage.' Arghhhhh! He's healthy, strong, still working, but the hearing is going ;)...See Morehearing aid questions
Comments (19)Can't speak for the VA part, but the HA part I can DH has had them since he was 6. Last pair we bought was 2 years ago..and we got the higher end. He has a severe hearing loss. He gets the digital (only amplifies the tones he can't hear, not all tones), CIC ones. They run about $5K, and are guaranteed for 3 years, we can then extend the warranty for another 2 years I think it is. Now..there is also one out that looks great, and I've known a couple of people out there that LOVE them...they're more like having a little microphone that sits just outside the ear opening (don't know if that area has a name)...so they don't have the "stuffed ear" feeling. DH goes to an audiologist, they do the hearing test for free. His hearing aids are Siemens..and Siemens are a great buy. The behind the ear can cause problems as you hear what's behind you (that's where the microphone is), where the CIC or the other ones (bit larger)...and I think that newer one I just mentioned...you hear what comes into the ear, as you would naturally. They're suppose to last about 5 years, but we try for 10..because they are so expensive and not covered by insurance. They can be covered by money in a cafeteria plan, but HSA's are more complicated. The cost of HA has stayed the same, but the quality goes up..along with the technology. Vickey...See MoreHelp with Hearing Loss and Hearing Aids Information
Comments (26)Well, I got my ReSound hearing aids this afternoon. I saw the ENT last week and have the typical drop-off bilaterally in higher frequencies. No organic problem although he did mention that there was a genetic component to my hearing loss pattern. Regardless, I was a little shocked when I first put them in (and they weren't yet calibrated) with all the sounds I immediately heard. Very weird. But then we worked for awhile and tweaked things here and there, and then I learned how to do things on the app on my phone. That's a really nice feature. So I've had them in for maybe 2 hours; not long. I went to Home Depot right afterwards and since then I've just been sitting out on my deck reading. And I have to say, there's lots of noise/sounds I've been missing-more than I ever realized. But oh-the bird song that I can hear again!! I was missing all that high pitched stuff, which I had realized, but I didn't know how much I was missing. The next big test will be next week when both daughters and all 4 grandchildren get here. We'll see if they notice anything different (ha.) Plus I'm curious to see how I tolerate the feel of the domes in my ears over time. Things in my ear canals have always bugged me but I assume I will build up a tolerance to that....See More
