Remodel: Carpet or hardwood OR HALF AND HALF on L-Stairs?

We've refurnished the wood floors in entry, hall, kitchen and dining of our 30 yo colonial-gorgeous. Next: replace carpet in remaining downstairs rooms-LR and DR- with the oak hardwood to match. The L-stairs greet the front entry. We were going to do wool carpet on the stairs and continue the carpet into the master bedroom and put chestnut cork in the other rooms (less $ and we can do the cork ourselves). Our floor guy suggests we put wood up the first flight of 8 steps and the landing, then carpet the remaining steps up to the second floor, continue it into the master. Is this crazy or smart? Is wool carpet (velvety cut pile) so bad on the stairs???
