Disappointed in new air fryer--do you like yours?
Comments (13)I think the big problem is that you started with too many adjustments. There was another thread here recently praising an air fryer so much it almost tempted me. :) The way it works is by blowing hot air, like a compact, powerful convection oven. Some have a stirring want for making chips. I can do the same thing in my wall oven and use tongs to stir. :) The whole point of the air fryer rather than the wall oven is to be compact, and super easy and not tie up your oven (they were invented for making French fries in tiny European apartments where you're lucky to have more than two burners and there's no oven). By starting with the Todd English video, you put it back to difficult. The time for cooking chicken increases non-linearly with how big/thick the pieces are. That's why "fryer" sized chickens are supposed to be small. Try it again with some French fries or sliced potatoes, some breaded tenders or strips, and other smaller things that people report success with. Get some successes of your own under your belt and learn how the machine work. Follow some recipes exactly, not just method, but exact size and quanity of the exact food recommended. And when it says spray with oil, spray with oil. There are some cans of oil spray that have pure oil (and therefore you must check them to make sure they don't go rancid in the cupboard), and there are some pump sprayers you can put your own oil in that work pretty well for awhile, though they tend to wear out too fast. Once you've mastered the stuff everyone else is doing, you'll have enough knowledge and experience with the machine that you should be able to adapt your own recipes and borrow methods from videos. The view is a heck of a lot better from the top of the learning curve!...See MoreCan you build in a toaster oven or air fryer in a kitchen island?
Comments (4)One problem, aside from venting, is building a custom space for an appliance with a short life span. As these appliances evolve in size, design, and features, they could quickly become outdated and the replacements might not fit the existing space you created just for the first one. In 17 years in our previous house, we had three different microwaves due to power interruptions. Trying to find a perfectly sized unit to fit in the custom space required my woodworker husband to alter the space....See MoreWhat do you cook in your air fryer and how big do I need for 2 people
Comments (46)Does it fry? No. Does it cook small amounts of food, convection style? Yes. We like ours and since we are recent empty nesters, I love it for roasted veg, thin cuts of meat which are easy to overcook conventionally. Great for warming up leftovers that could get soggy in the microwave. It cooks faster than our toaster oven and makes the best baked potatoes/sweet potatoes ever. I keep it in the pantry just off our kitchen and of late have been using it several times a week. Today, I did roasted beets which I will reheat when I do baby potatoes and green beans for dinner. My 20 something daughters use theirs several times a week. For the investment it's a great little appliance provided you have the space for it. Since we don't eat a lot of toast and we have a toaster for when we want to, I am thinking of getting rid of my toaster oven, now that we have the air fryer. ETA - when we were a family of four, it wouldn't have been as sufficient as it is for us now....See MoreAir Fryer recommendations
Comments (6)The salesman we have dealt with for appliances at Best Buy told us he has a small Cuisinart one when we were looking at one for DS for Christmas. It is the toaster oven/boxy type he wanted so he could do pizza in iot, but it was on the small side. We wanted him to have something he could cook a chicken in,We also looked at the Sur la Table one at Costco because of the features and it was on sale for $99 before the holidays. He wound up with a Breville that was still a good deal with a sale and reward credit that was about to expire. Those were our 3 finalists and we felt they would all work well for him. If you are looking for the bucket type, I can't help you at all....See MoreAlisande
