Mid Range Cabinet Recommendations

We are currently planning a kitchen renovation, in order to see a reasonableROI we are hoping to stay around $30K for cabinets/countertops/backsplash installed. We aren’t looking for anything too fancy just a quality product that will last, is functional and look nice. Our kitchen is 125” X 90” L shape with island and pantry cabinet and 3 additional lower cabinets to line a half wall (see plan below). We are planning darker full overlay cabinets with quartz counter tops and the same material for backsplash.

We have 3 bids for “quality cabinets”, Waypoint and Echelon but are open to other brands if they are better quality for the cost. Any suggestion on brands, big box versus kitchen and bath store etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I use Ikea for all those reasons and BTW IMO quartz is a poor choice for counters and cannot be used as backsplash behind cooking appliances . Go check out white granites for the counter polished and then a nice tile backsplash .

Those are builder grade level products. Cabinets for a middle of the road mid priced mid grade quality 80k kitchen remodel average 25-28K. And are 1/4-1/3 of the total remodel cost. Typically a kitchen remodel codts 15-25% of the non extreme location home’s value, depending on how much has to be brought up to code, is being changed, structural changes, and other invisible considerations that must be done. The budget isn’t just about the pretty stuff.

A 30K kitchen remodel is keeping the existing cabinets, with a 10K professional finishing job, 10K new counters, and 10K new backsplash, lighting, accessories, and DIY painting the walls. Same layout, same floors, same cabinets, and same bones. New makeup only.

If you want to move up to a full gut mid grade quality remodel, look at Kraftmaid, Showplace, Kemper, Yorktown, Merillat Masterpiece, Shiloh, Diamond, Dynasty, Decora, Durasupreme, Medallion, Kitchencraft, Innovae, etc.

Whatever you choose, make sure that it can be serviced easily (and well) in your area. It seems every mid- level has success and horror stories on this board, but you already know that.

Brookhaven. Be sure to price around. The place I eventually went with said, "No one pays list!" I have a small kitchen in a very old house. I did not want to lose the very wide trim around an outside door, so that meant cabinets could be no more than 21" deep. Brookhaven makes bathroom cabs, so in addition to 24" depth, 21", 18", and 15" are standard depths for lowers/pantry cabs. Their uppers are 13" deep instead of 12". Because I also wanted a couple of non-standard sizes to maximize space, I went with their custom line, Woodmode, for those cabinets. I'm sure people can chime in with formulae they have been given, but if you really and truly have *only* 84", it is wise to have an inch or two leeway to compensate for any unevenness in the three walls or floor and the angles where they meet. Otherwise, there could be a problem when leveling the cabs. The cabinets can go flush together, however. I would have used Ikea if I had a larger kitchen and didn't need/want to maximize the available storage space.

@Wes Hunt I believe Shiloh does an industry-standard post-catalyzed conversion varnish, so hopefully the finish will be more durable for you than Kemp would have been. As I'm sure you're aware, there are several different levels of pricing within the lines offered by W. W. Wood Products, Inc., Shiloh's parent company. Shiloh for some reason hasn't amassed many reviews around the web at the time of this writing outside of those on Houzz, but there are several threads here at Houzz that do discuss Shiloh's offerings and warranty fulfillment in depth. One of the things I've noticed is that people who went with the less expensive lines wished they had upgraded to the top Shiloh offering, and for people who did receive defective pieces, it was sometimes an issue getting satisfactory warranty service. If you are working with a reputable sales rep, hopefully they would take care of any issues you had promptly. Plenty of people have been very pleased with their Shiloh cabinetry. The tolerances on Shiloh's inset styles aren't as tight as you'd see from more expensive brands like Christopher Peacock or Kennebec according to some reviewers familiar with a wide range of brands, but for many people who want to save and yet still want that inset look, Shiloh does just fine for them. Of course, as you're aware, inset is not the only style Shiloh offers. I hope your project goes smoothly. Thanks for allowing the Houzz community to have input into your research process.

Our kitchen is almost the exact same size and layout as yours, except we will also have a double wall oven cabinet on the other side of the fridge, and where you have the 3 lowers on the half wall, we will also have two uppers with glass doors and a wine rack in between. We ordered Diamond Reflections cabinets through Lowe's at the end of September, and they're expected in early March, so I can't vouch for their quality yet (fingers are crossed hard!). With all plywood construction, stained maple, almost all bases are drawers, authentic end panels, crown moulding, and light rail, it came to about $25,000. This does not include installation (we're installing them ourselves), sink, countertops, backsplash, etc. We chose Diamond cabinets based on searches I did on Houzz forums, and from what I read on here, they are quality cabinets as long as you stay away from the bottom level that they sell. We purchased the middle level with the upgrade to all plywood construction.

I do also want to put in a vote for IKEA cabinets, though. I put them in when I renovated the kitchen in my last house, and they were 10 years old when I sold the house in 2020. We got 10 offers on that house, and the kitchen was a huge reason why there was so much interest in the house. Everyone thought it was a brand new kitchen. We were going to put IKEA cabinets in this house, also, but after waiting over a year and a half due to supply issues, we decided to move on from IKEA. I hope I don't end up regretting that decision.
