What are the best Mid-Range Frameless Cabinets?
Comments (15)Brookhaven. Be sure to price around. The place I eventually went with said, "No one pays list!" I have a small kitchen in a very old house. I did not want to lose the very wide trim around an outside door, so that meant cabinets could be no more than 21" deep. Brookhaven makes bathroom cabs, so in addition to 24" depth, 21", 18", and 15" are standard depths for lowers/pantry cabs. Their uppers are 13" deep instead of 12". Because I also wanted a couple of non-standard sizes to maximize space, I went with their custom line, Woodmode, for those cabinets. I'm sure people can chime in with formulae they have been given, but if you really and truly have *only* 84", it is wise to have an inch or two leeway to compensate for any unevenness in the three walls or floor and the angles where they meet. Otherwise, there could be a problem when leveling the cabs. The cabinets can go flush together, however. I would have used Ikea if I had a larger kitchen and didn't need/want to maximize the available storage space....See MoreNeed help deciding on range: mid-range or high-end?
Comments (39)So glad to come across this post. I am in nearly the same position. A 30" gas Kenmore Elite is supposed to show up next week and I am not excited! Nearly all my research on the Kenmore was positive and price wise it was good. I wanted a 30" gas burner, convection oven, slide in. Reading not so good reviews on the GE Cafe or any others such as KA or Electrolux (and and a significant up in price from the Kenmore) - sent me to the Kenmore. But honestly I don't trust the back control panel to last long & really don't like the look or need the features. I just want to turn the stove and burners on and off. We seriously considered the Bertazzoni but the oven was way too small (it is very pretty and basic functioning) and next thing we know are looking at Wolf for more than 3x the price of the Kenmore! It is amazing how you can mentally upgrade. We love to cook but spent the last 4 years with an ancient hotpoint that only had three functioning burners and was fine (my husband not so much :) I am glad to hear good things about the Cafe & others. Any more input on those 30" slide in "mid range" stoves - KA, Electrolux, GE - would be wonderful. And I am going to check out the NXR. Thanks....See MoreBest mid (low?) range painted cabinet: Kemper, Medallion, Home Crest
Comments (14)I agree with smalloldhouse on the RTA cabs. Barker might be a good quality at a cheaper price, but not a great solution if you don't have the time to assemble. My husband would have killed me if I ordered RTA cabs :) I have said this before in another post because I just researched cabs myself. It seems like there isn't a cab out there that people are not complaining about. Pick 2-3 cab makers you like, compare the specs & go for it. I read another thread where someone basically said mid grade cabs are generally the same (except for what Adorion said - make sure you are comparing apples to apples) and to buy from someone you like & will help you through the process. Not sure if that is helpful. Reading reviews for months will make you nuts and will paralyze you into no decision at all. Who knows what some of these people are doing to their cabs that are writing reviews?? I have had builder grade cabs for 20 years!! And there isn't one thing wrong with them, except that I hate them :) I know a few people who have medallion & are happy with them (except the silver line for reasons stated above), my dad got Starmark without a minute of research & they are really nice....See Morekitchen cabinet - good mid-range manufacturers
Comments (9)On the plywood vs mdf question, this is something I posted here in 2012 that might still be helpful: The mdf (AKA "furniture board") vs. plywood is an old argument around here. You can search it on this site and get a million or so hits, but how about an easy summary? First, definitions: Plywood - made from thin sheets of wood veneer layered so that the grain of each sheet is 90 degrees to the ones on either side. There are 8 recognized grades from sorta glued together with all sorts of defects (fine for some purposes) to really nice. Cabinets would use the top 2 grades. Generally an "upgrade," although many dispute that the upgrade involves any perceptible quality vs. an upgrade in cash outlay. mdf - made from wood fibers combined with wax and resin and formed under high heat and pressure. Doesn't have knot holes and other imperfections of plywood. Doesn't hold wood screws as well as wood, so other fasteners may be used. Often used for painted cabs since it doesn't have a wood grain showing and paints up well. "furniture board" - highest quality mdf, although not all manufacturers use the term. Any decent cabinets made of mdf will use this quality no matter what they call it. particle board - is like mdf except that instead of starting with wood fibers, it starts with wood chips and chunks that are waxed and resined together. Not suitable for cabinets. If any cabinets are actually made with this, you'd probably purchase them in a back alley for a "really good deal." Some building people use the term loosely when they really mean mdf. If you care to go into this more - people have some pretty strong opinions on the subject - type "mdf vs plywood site:gardenweb.com" into google and check the results....See Moreshivece
