Cabinet Help - Mid range quality cabinet?
Comments (29)I just wanted to say that we recently installed Kabinart cabinets in our kitchen and we are very happy with them. When I originally looked for Kabinart reviews on here there weren't many and it made me a little nervous. We did a maple perimeter in starlight and a glazed cherry island. Interestingly enough cherry and maple were the same price, and they come standard all plywood, full extension and soft close drawers (I think a lot of the cabinet manufacturers are moving towards this). In contrast we ordered our master vanities from Kraftmaid and when they came in the drawer glides were all messed up, and they just didn't seem to have quite the same quality, although I'm sure if we had done our kitchen in Kraftmaid we would still be happy with it. We priced both lines and they were coming in pretty comparable. The only thing I didn't like with Kabinart were the cheap plastic shelf clips so I ordered metal ones, but other than that we have been very happy with the shipping/packing of them and with the quality of them during use (especially with 3 small children)....See MoreKitchen Cabinets: -- Ikea, Home Depot/Lowes or custom?
Comments (9)As others have noted it depends on what your goals are for this remodel. (1) How long will you be in your current house (the one you're remodeling)? [If a short time 3 years, remodel based on YOUR needs/wants] (2) What is the goal of your remodel? What kind of kitchen are you going for? Take the "The Sweeby Test". (3) How much do you plan to DIY? If at least some DIY, how good are your DIY skills? (4) What is your budget? (5) Look a the Finished Kitchen Blog to see sample kitchens and their various elements. (6) What is important to you? (I know, the best of everything you can afford!) You've already defined your kitchen's feel (Sweeby Test). (7) Now, armed with what you want out of your kitchen, your budget, and ideas from the FKB, list your priorities for you kitchen. Some people really want a granite or soapstone counter and will compromise on cabinets or flooring or appliances. Some want solid wood doors and all-wood door boxes while others want top-of-the-line, the-best-money-can-buy appliances. What are your priorities? To consider: Cabinets: ...Do you want well-built, well-accessorized cabinets or will basic (but still solid) cabinets with only a few accessories be fine? ...What style of door do you want...modern or traditional? ...Also look, at the style of drawer fronts...if you have mostly drawers in your base cabinets then drawer fronts will be a major part of the look of your cabinets in your kitchen. ...What type of doors do you want...wood, wood-veneer, metal, MDF? ...What construction do you want in your cabinet boxes...plywood, particleboard, metal, MDF? ...Do you need/want full-extension drawers and/or pullout shelves? ...Look at drawer & pullout shelf glides...are they plastic or metal? (metal is generally stronger and lasts longer) ...How much DIY do you plan? Some cabinets, like IKEA, come ready to assemble (RTA). Most come assembled. Other elements to consider: Countertop: granite, soapstone, quartz, solid surface, wood, laminate, recycled glass or paper, etc. Flooring: wood, tile, stone, laminate, etc. Backsplash: none, partial (continuation of countertop material), tile/stone, paint, etc. Lighting: recessed, undercabinet, pendants, etc. Appliances: You can spend 5,000 plus dollars on a range or refrigerator or you can spend One thing to keep in mind is that some things will last longer than others. Generally, appliances will need to be replaced long before cabinets and countertops so yes, you might go "light" on the appliances initially or even re-use what you already have. That would leave more of your budget for higher-end cabinets, countertop, and flooring--items that you change much less often. Backsplashes can be delayed. All these things are subjective...based on your needs and wants. You will get many opinions here; read them knowing that everyone is different and everyone (1) has different goals for their kitchen and (2) has different priorities. Filter comments through the lens of your goals/needs/wants. Good luck!...See MoreHELP with Kitchen Cabinets (KraftMaid, Merillat, Medallion or Who??)
Comments (11)Where in PA? If near HB, check out Swartz kitchens for Shiloh. They did well on pricing for the painted cabinets. Lowes and Just Cabinets did almost the same on the Medallion brand , which are Schuler at Lowes. KM was best at the big box for me, due to the sales they often have. The Masterpiece just did not compare in quality to the others and the pricing was about the same. I live in York county and the private dealers I dealt with did not offer the best pricing and were not usually as receptive to my input....See Morebest cabinets - Kraftmaid, Thomasville, Mid-Continent, Wolf

Sophie, I took your advice and went to a dealer, but after I got home, I saw that they did just what you said the big box stores do - they put me in a junior line with lesser specs: Schrock Entra. I said just what you recommended: 1/2” furniture board is more than fine (don't need plywood). I also said that I wanted soft close doors and drawers and full extension drawers. I assume the rough quote they gave me at this initial meeting was with doors and drawers soft-close and full extension as I specified, but it wasn't until I got home that I saw in the catalog that the standard cabinet is only 3/8" furniture board and that soft close and full extension are upgrades. And from what I read here, you pay a lot for upgrades - it's often more cost effective to go to a better line with those features standard. This dealer doesn't sell KraftMaid, so it's impossible to compare apples to apples, but at least when I walked out of the Home Depot with the KM catalog, I could read that 1/2" side panels, soft-close, and full-extension were standard. So, you are quite right, it's clear as mud to me. This all makes it very difficult to make an educated decision about cabinets!...See MoreJustine
