Marble Companion Countertop in Off-White Kitchen?
Comments (20)2L: I did read that Danby marble is supposedly less absorptive than other marbles, but I think that the difference, if it makes a difference at all, goes to the staining, not the etching issue. All marbles etch with acid, but the honed finish hides the etches better. (I forgot to mention my marble is honed.) I've had no problems with staining on my sealed stone. I chose the Danby primarily because I loved the caramel veining in it, which the Italian marbles I looked at did not have, and also it's *fairly* local for me, as there is a Vermont Danby quarry within a 3 hour drive of my home. I purchased it from a local stoneyard that gets it from that quarry, and the stoneyard folks were happy to hammer a bit off the slab corner for me to take home as a sample. My stoneyard also carries the Caesarstone slabs, and I learned after calling the company that though all batches or lots of each color are engineered by the same process, there can be slight variations from lot to lot (presumably from variation in the natural quartz used in the process) so it's important to use "same lot" slabs for jobs that require more than one slab. When I went, they had slabs from two lots of the Blizzard color, and there was a smidgen of green tinge to one of the lots that I didn't like, although I could only tell because they were right next to each other. I just chose the actual slab that looked better with my marble sample and they marked it just like they marked the marble slab I chose. Good luck, keep us posted!...See MoreTalk me down off the ledge ... Aloe Aristata look so thirrrsty!
Comments (43)Jeff It seems to me that I am the only one against the misting. But I have to make myself clear: I believe many (not all!!!) ppl just assume that they should mist the plant. Misting the soil should be np, but I still rather put them in gritty mix, in container with drainage hole and water if and when needed. I don't need to worry about not wetting the plant, about overwatering, and drainage. I won't say that everything always survives, but success rate is quite high. Many don't care about gritty mix; I love it. I can take a hose and water them all outdoors. It can rain and I don't have to take them inside (obviously, not a torrential rain that lasts for days and days - but we don't get that kind of rain; and obviously - not hailstorm...) I like to make it simple and found gritty to be very simple. Much simpler than hoping to find a bag of 'good soil'. Buying ingredients in bulk is very economical too and I would bet that this 'custom' mix is much less costly than bagged soil. I know that it isn't possible for everyone, especially if no storage - and/or car - is available. I was, perhaps, bit obsessed ('anal'?) at first, trying to find the right bark...measure exactly...I can go on. Don't do it any more, buy ingredients maybe 2x/year in bulk. I have many other plants - won't bore anybody with naming them, there is close to 100, and many are going into grittier mix when needed to repot. I use some soil for those plants, but no more than 50% and often much less. And yes, I use chicken grit for those too....See MoreQuartz countertops, why are the majority off-white?
Comments (9)If you would like something that is pure white you should look at crystal diamond from technistone it is only one of two companies that have access to pure white quartz What you are seeing is the use of off white quartz in the products to explain the colour different in white from most manufactures they have the following generally 1) Dirty white - it looks like a cream off white, this is due to the off white quartz used as well as most will use something like Titanium dioxide, Zinc oxide or a combination of both. for the metal oxide or color. 2) Blue white - is still the same off white quartz, though they generally add very small amount of cobalt to the mix. The same way surf board manufacturers add blue to the clear resins to make the whites brighter. Also some quartz manufactures will not use titanium or zinc but something else to get the whiter color. The only two companies that have access to pure white quartz is Technistone and Silestone. Why their whites are whiter and more pure. Technistone has the whitest of whites on the market...See Moresmudges on quartz countertops that won’t come off
Comments (27)Hi Ellen! Sorry for the delay in responding. The daltile rep came out and wiped it down with acetone which helped, but I foolishly thought it could be done a little more and did it myself, resulting in a pretty big dull spot next to my stove. Luckily, the placement of a cutting board right on top of the spot looks good so that is what I will be doing. The acetone definitely helped the smudges though! I should have just not gotten so overzealous and taken matters into my own hands further. You live and you learn! :)...See Moresherry52
