Fireplaces Design Dilemma Home Decorating

is my fireplace outdated?

I look at it every day and I think I hate it! Should I paint it? Should I tear it out and start over? Just keep white and change tile? House was built in early 90s—don’t want to go too contemporary—does it look ok? Well except for the needed paint touchups. Would love some opinions! Ideas! Ps tv must stay!

The overall shape /colors aren't outdated -- I'd change up your accessories, which are a little "fussy".

Agree that a frame tv would be nicer. i too would say take away all the little things on the mantel and also the grate. what is the furniture that looks like it is pressed up against the fp? I would also relocate the sconces.

Whatever you do with the brick (paint it, glaze it) make sure the product you're using is heat safe. You can also update with a new gas fireplace, by choosing a unit with lighter media options, like driftwood or river rocks, your space will look brighter. Another option is to add faux birch logs to the wood storage for a brighter, cleaner look.

I am at a loss as to how to update this stove wall in our family room other than tile or stucco. I was wondering if anyone had a similar situation and was able to rework it without tremendous expense or completely starting over. The room is being updated with paint and new lighting . Style will be rustic modern With beams boxed out and retrimmed with white wood and heavier molding and stucco ceiling replaced with light wood. Walls are going white with black bookcases and window trim.

Overall I think you want to draw attention away from the TV screen and move the eye to other areas of the room. So it would be helpful to see the whole wall. It would also give is some clues to your decor style.

You could somewhat de-emphasize the TV by painting the section of wall behind it a much darker version of the wall colour. Then it would blend in better when it was turned off. LOL that particular image on the TV is ghastly!

An easy fix is to remove all the decor items from the mantle. Draw the eye down and away from the TV by painting the fireplace screen a lighter colour. Maybe a cream colour, with an antique look by rubbing some of the paint off.

I would move the wrought iron wall sconces away from the TV area. Or if you really like them there, consider painting them a lighter colour to help them blend in better. Would the candles look better at half their size? To me they seem too tall.

Depending on what's happening with the rest of the wall, you could add some decor item(s) sitting on the floor at the sides of the fireplace, again to draw the eye away from the TV.
